Preparing for winter II

Hi not sure if this is the right place to post but I remember seeing somewhere about how to thicken up the curtains you already have i think it might have been by sewing blankets on the back or something but not really sure if anyone has any suggestions i would really appreciate it as we had to buy cheap less than a tenner a pair as we are renting a bedroomed house with huge windows and are on a very tight budget so any ideas or suggestions to make the house warmer on a budget would be great as last winter was quite cold and I hate spending money on heating!

recommend this site for good quality clothing at reduced prices - have put a couple of linkys but certainly worth having a look through as i got the DS base layers for playing rugby for less than £5, and there are a few climacool and dri-fit tops that are brilliant for under jumpers etc. did also notice on the kids section lined trousers for around the £7 mark.

Most of us are sewing (or use safety pins) to attach fleece blankets to the backs of curtains - it should make a huge difference to the heat lost from a room through the windows. You can pick up fleeces really cheap from asda/dunelm mills and lots of other places too.
Also, if you have radiators, I made a cardboard panel covered with bubble wrap (free from under fruit in the crates in MrT) and then tinfoil and put that behind the radiators to stop heat leaking out through outside wallsSeemed to work really well although you can buy panels specially for the job.
Hope that helps0 -
Yayyyyyyyyy I just had a quote for having the gaping hole in my living room turned back into a real fireplace :j:j:j
After much umming and arrrring he gave me a rough estimate which is just about IN BUDGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am soooooooooooooo pleased - I have wanted to put an open fire in here since I first bought my house 11 years ago but there was an old back boiler in there and I have only just been able to have a new boiler sited upstairs in the airing cupboard instead.
That has cheered me up today0 -

I was in the huge Primark at Coventry the other day, their childrens sizes only go up to age 13, my DD is 11 and can't fit in that age size [she's not big, Primark are small sizes] I did notice that in the ladies section they had the all in one PJ's in a fleece material - may be she could fit into a size 8 or 10 as my DD does

ooh thank you sooo much! my daughter is nearly 10 and the 13 year size fits but she may grow out of it before spring so i'll take her into the ladies section and try both a size 8 and 10... i'll buy as big as i can get without it being ridiculous in hopes they will last through next winter too... this girl is growing so quickly and is so tall (and nearly size 7 ladies shoes already!) don't know if it will work but i will try0 -
I have found my winter boots....i am totally in love with them,

The price tag....not so in love with... argh. they make normal uggs seem reasonably priced! I've looked at bear paw and emu and will see if i can get any good deals in tk maxx, but i love love love these bootsAnnual Grocery Budget £364.00/£1500

I got some for me and 2 daughters last year, my youngest has outgrown hers, so have cut the feet off and sewed some slipper sox into them, they wil do for another year at least.
that's clever! i used to do that with her old tights, cut the toes off then they became leggings under her long skirts or trousers. my daughters all in one doesn't have feet in them but i got her some of those soft fleecy socks and she has two pairs of slipper boots (my first two failed attempts to get some that fit my huge feet properly!)
shame primark doesn't cater to larger sizes, i'd love some all in ones for myself too, and no i don't care about the looks the postie would give me when i answered the door wearing them :rotfl:0 -
Blimey we really are all hammering down to getting things done arn't we :j
Yesterday DH finished off putting the new pipe in and re-laying down all the block paving. He has had a small amount of concreting to do around the base of the downpipe, which he has done this morning. So while he has the ready mixed concrete bucket on the go he is now going to do the small holes that have appeared around the external waste pipes underneath the kitchen window. That is something that I have been able to cross off on the list and he has done two jobs in one go. Today is a good day for getting it done as well as the concrete will set well too :T
It's iddly piddly bits left now to buy and do, so thankfully we are well ahead of the game - I hopeApart from the remaining big job of painting the gable ends we are pretty much sorted now :j

How many tin's of tomatoe's have you got now???:D
:D:D More than most normal people; there are currently 67 under the bed, 8 in the wall cupboard in the kitchen and 2 on the counter waiting to be incorporated into a chilli this evening.:D:D:D
