Your term is a similar length to ours (although we go to 23rd December) we have a one week break in October which is very welcome. I start back on Monday too.
I may have exaggerated a wee bit-- we are done December 20th for the Xmas vacation. We also have about a week off as well, but its broken into 2 long weekends. We get a long weekend in October for Columbus Day and another in November for Thanksgiving and "Black Friday". The next term starts the third week of January and goes until the 3rd week of May. In the spring semester we get 2 weeks vacation-- one in February and one in April-- Yay!!!0 -
Hi Kathy i love the idea of fleece lined trousers they sound so snuggly. My mum moved to USA a while back and has sent some of these over before for the kids but i thought they were just for the little ones not us grown ups. Thanks for sharing your winter bits with us
They sell them for men and women here. This where I usually buy them. I'm sure they'll ship to you. Love this store as everything is guaranteed for lifetime and they pay return shipping if an item is not right. As a newbie I cannot post links yet so just "google" L.L. Bean and search for lined jeans.0 -
I'm thinking that we are calling the same thing by different names. Our "flannel" is 100% cotton, brushed and very soft and fuzzy. Is this the same as your flanelette?
Our fleece material here is 100% synthetic (polyester).
I think my confusion here may stem from a US law that says that children's pajamas (yes we spell it different here) must be made of flame retardant materials-- so they cannot be made from flannel (flanelette). So all the kid's PJ's are made from a thin fuzzy synthetic flannel substitute that pills up (gets little fuzzy balls all over it) and is prone to static cling. Hate the stuff! I always made my family's from regular flannel and we have no open flames to worry about anyway.

Hi ladies.
I have been reading when I can and my list is now as long as my arm. However I am preparing for winter and baby due in January.
I am thinking of getting black out blinds for all windows - I used to have venetian blinds but I didn't like people noisying through the windows so I currently have nets up. If I left my nets up and put my black out blind in behind them and then the curtains behind them do you think that would be nice and toastie or would you still recommend fleeces attached the the curtains (which are lined anyway)?
I have also invested in the door brushes - would you still use the sausage draught excluders too (my dogs have attacked my previous ones thinking they were toys :rotfl:)
My list of things to do are:
This week - Declutter entire house and sort through my cupboards to see what food I have and what I want to stock up on.
Pay day towards the end of the week so I am stocking up some essentials ... Cushelle currently £8 for 24 in Te$co or Andrex £6 for 18 in Pound$tretcher.
Over the next few months ...- New PJ's, Slippers & Dressing Gowns for me and DH
- Car Box to make up (will collect bits and bobs from weekly shop)
- Buy Grit & Snow Shovel
- Stock up on pet food and litter (planned on doing this with weekly shop to build up a months supply or so)
- Build up storecupboards for food and toiletries
- Stock freezer with meat joints and bulk cook meals just in case
- Check I am getting best deal on Gas / Electricity and change if need be

PS Welcome KMillerProjects made for craft fair - 40
1st fair on 13/4/14 :j0 -
Yes you are quite right Kmiller4 it is brushed cotton by another name really. It is a cotton sheet that has been prickled all over to make the fibres all fluffy and adds extra warmth and comfort. I am sure we do have the standard as US with childrens clothes being fire retardant as well I know childrens clothes here go through rigorous testingCat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money

DH went up town today so his mission was to visit the pound shops and buy deicer. There was none to be had:( We later visited Asda on our travels and I bought the only can in stock. Cost £1.50 but does mean I've now got 2 spray cans and 6 trigger sprays of it in the garage. No scrapers around anywhere either so I just think our stores aren't stocking any winter car things yet. Also visited a larger B & M's and bought a Unibond Stop Humidity thingy. It's only single use though:( and cost £2.49 but again it's the first time I've managed to find one so I feel happier having one on for DD's bedroom.0

I don't know abwsco, I think people are thinking ahead this year and could be buying things in advance. Helen Jelly said that those fleece blankets in B&Q were going quickly. People generally are saying they are noticing a change in the weather and nearly everybody I have spoken to have said that it is like Autumn. Our friends drive the big lorries for a living (you know the big massive articulated lorries pulling the 40ft trailers). They work night shifts and they have both said it is so noticeable how chilly it is in the mornings from previous summers.
Just a tip in case none of you have done it - wash your dusters out and get them dry. They dry in no time anyway. I wash mine as I go along, usually in the water of something that I have hand washed to make it more economical.
I have found one of my old but beautiful wine red coloured dressing gowns that I bought in a sale years ago from Next. It is so lovely ad cosy warm. I have it in the washing machine as I type because I want to freshen it up. It is velour like on the outside which makes it really plush.Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

Rainy-Days wrote: »Well, I cannot tell you all how thrilled I am with the flannelette sheets, I have just finished them off in the tumble dryer, they hardly needed any heat at all and even better was that in the lint collector there was half a little finger of fluff all told. How good is that!
So, I shall look at getting the second set ASAP now as these are just superb. Thought I would mention if you are interested they are made in Portugal and are a really substantial quality not flimsy at all. I think we may get a few years of use of these - hopefully
I have packed them away in plastic bags and laid them down with Lenor/Bounce tumble dryer sheets to keep them fresh and sweet smelling until I get them out October time.
Everybody is saying how Autumnal is it. DH is now really of the opinion that the earths axis could have shifted slightly when the Tsunami hit Japan and that is why we got an early summer in April and came into the rest of summer a bit too soon which is bringing Autumn and Winter forward. Don't know if he is right or not but he may have a theory there as it is know that after significant earth quakes it can alter the earths axis!
We have decided to put the garden furniture, hose, switching off the outside tap and covering it over and making sure all external locks and hinges are oiled by the end of September now. If it does hit sooner everything is closed down and put away outside. I think thats sensible really - hope you have all had a great day today and are being frugal and prepping :T
Yes distinctly autumnal. I am collecting conkers now and the acorns are on the trees.
We got flannelette sheets last year and they were fabulous. If anything Kids Dad was too hot but I was very snug. I think I will have another look and see if there any in stock....I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0
