Why is that jumpers & cardigans are perfectly fine when you put them away but when you get them out again buttons are loose & threads are pulled etc?

Hi Kathy and welcome , I'm fairly new to this forum too and am amazed that at my age there are things still to learn! Would love to hear how you manage too. I'm (almost) looking forward to winter to see how toasty my little house is after all the effort I'm putting in. Had to smile at your bit about the children 'Two seem to show up periodically for help.' I think many of us with adult children have at least one like that - gotta love 'em ;). Good to 'see' you, keep coming back :)

  • Hi Kathy

welcome to OS (thats old style :) )

you might find you get a few questions about winter prep US style, especially as you are more than likely to get more snow than most of us :D

We get tons of lake effect snow every winter-- usually somewhere between 125 and 150 inches (approximately 4-5 meters). Fortunately it is not all at once, but usually starts in November and sometimes continues through 'til May.

Welcome Kathy, glad to have you join us -:eek: that's a lot of snow!:eek:

Another lovely day here (typical as back at work on Mon:() so loads of washing already out and debating whether to do the fleecy pjs (not sure if it's a bit early yet:o).

Going to finish clearing the garage today:) (I can do it).

Feeling a lot more prepared now after the past couple of weeks - the positive side of having rainy days (with a few sunny ones it has to be said) when on 2 weeks hols:D.

Sorted my car kit and have put in the car:D (minus the shovel as it really does take up too much room).

Cupboards all now sorted, lino laid in bathrooms :j (what a difference) and pile of stuff in the spare room sorted into charity, bin and the rest now has a home in the newly cleared cupboards:j.

    I'm getting there:

    • Toiletries (done)
    • Kitchen/bathroom supplies (done)
    • Clothing (done/ordered)
    • Car (done)
    • Pets (done - apart from a couple of extra bags of food to be ordered October)

    Still to do:

    • Boiler service (arranged)
    • Gutters cleared out (arranged)
    • Outside light bulbs changed (trying diet coke today, will be the hacksaw if not)
    • Food supply (started - will try to get bits when on offer and do a big online shop beg October for anything missing)

I've decided I'm going to try a draft excluder at the patio doors but not quite sure yet how to deal with it being two thicknesses - any ideas?

    Have a great day everyone:D

Well I have decided to wash my flannelette sheets and they are out right now on the line and then what I intend to do is put them in the vacuum sealed bags and put them in the drawer under the bed until October. That will not only keep them fresh but also their freshly laundered smell will stay there too.

Got to tell you that those Dunelm Flannelette sheets are brilliant there was absolutely no fluff coming off them at all, not even a single bit shedded when I put them on the line. I think what I will do is get my other set from Dunelm and be done with it. I was going to buy them in Cornwall but I won't bother now with the quality that I have.

:j Hi Kathy and a big welcome to you. Hope you have found all the lists to do useful

  • Welcome Kathy - it`ll be good to hear from you about your winter tactics (the pictures in my head of your part of the world are snippets from old Simon & Garfunkel songs - which I love!) Also I love reading `a year of slow cooking` blog but much of what Stephanie O`Dea writes leaves little gaps in my understanding.

I was in Millets today and saw fleece jumpers on sale for £4.99 each. Even better it was 3 for 2, so I bought three of them for £9.98 :T

Is that the thick ones? They had an offer on these online last year and I lived in them during the really cold snap. I washed them so much, I oculd do with some more. Off to check if its online too ...

    I've done nothing recently.

Payday soon, I've earned over £100 extra in o/t - will be purchasing some winter boots and will get bathroom in order next - i think we need a big rug for the floor to try and keep some heat in there, will also get plenty of loo roll, shampoo etc in.
