Broomstick I hope that your boy gets home safely. This weather is causing some worry isn't it? Frugal have you thought of posting your wm's symptoms on the InMyHome forum? There are some very knowledgeable people on there and I've found them very helpful. Might save a call-out. I hope so, you depend on these bloomin' machines don't you? I find it so frustrating when they don't work because I can't do anything about it.

It sounds like your pipes may be frozen as you suspect.

Thank you Eeny. He's back home now complete with a new pair of thermal gloves bought at lunchtime. He said his other ones left his hands freezing this morning. :) He also had the sense to talk to the bus driver about the company's plans for bus routes tomorrow morning so he has some advance idea about what is going on. He'll be heading off early tomorrow again, but at least should be back for supper.

Big hugs Frugal, I hope you get sorted, failing that eat chocolate, it won't help with the washing but might make you feel a bit better.

Washing in the bath might help, is there any chance you could get hold of an old fashioned spin drier? Probably cheaper than solving your washing machine problem. Worth a post on your local Freecycle perhaps?

He sounds like a sensible lad, you see? some of it must rub off when we think that they aren't listening:rotfl:I think that teenage survival kit is a really good idea. Especially around here where they go out at night without coats! My son was once stuck on the metro at night when it broke down as he was returning from work at 11.30. No lights or heating and they eventually had to walk to the next station.
How about those little stretchy gloves? they wouldn't take up much room, and a multigrain bar, (for some reason they all seem to carry water anyway these days which is a good thing) I like the idea of a high vis jacket, very sensible.:)
Frugal, been thinking about your wm (!) have you thought of defrosting it from the inside? Wheatpacks or hot waterbottles in the drum. Just a thought...:o

Nicki is there some way you can hang a towel or a blanket out of the window to cover it, it's quite surprising how little the temperature needs to rise to just get it moving.

Just to give you a laugh my neighbour had the same thing but at ground level, she kicked the pipe in frustration and broke the it, the boiler has worked fine ever since.

Unfortunately it runs the length of the gable wall with no windows as its north facing and about 3ft from the neighbours gable wall. Its a small passageway between our houses which is why its such a pain to get to. Its an icerink down there ATM so we can't access it.:( Its a waiting game but we'll be fine, its working for now ;)

Could you hang a feshly filled hot water bottle (take any fluffy cover off first !) on a piece of strong nylon string or plastic cable out of the window and rest it on the overflow pipe for a while. If it's blocked with ice, that could help thaw it out. Or pouring a kettle of hot water down on it? (We're a mine of useful or useless suggestions on this site, arn't we, but sometimes the odd hint that we haven't thought of may help to get somebody temporarily out of their difficulties).

My washer has done the same now, it is in an outside leanto conservatory which has no heating, will go out with a hairdryer later to try and thaw the pipes, I know it is the pipes as the machine is all coming on properly just not filling and it did on Saturday; added to which I have a boiler engineer here as we speak trying to fix my boiler which has decided to stop firing. (it is oil). Don't think the -10 overnight has hellped at all
