OH I am right fed up :(

I have had the TD on for over an hour, now got an elec radiator in there... The shed (I call it a shed, its a brick building, flat roof, no insulation etc) is warm, prob warmer than the house and its still not working... I can only assume that the underground pipes have frozen solid as the one on the outside of the house was well insulated when I did my winter preps...

I suppose I could go and put a hot water bottle against that pipe just in case it is that one.... but that means removing all my insulation which was a beggar to get on in the first place :(

AND its started snowing AGAIN here! Looks lovely, and all my preps have worked out well as i've not had to leave the house in days (not even been dressed in days!) but the one thing I can't control, is the one problem I have :(

Hi Frugal, sorry to go for the obvious, but having the extreme temperatures on your mind you are understandably thinking frozen pipes. I don't wish to offend but have you checked for kinks in pipes, an odd sock stuck somewhere, or a fuse gone? Even some little beastie nibbling at a cable, or nesting somewhere? Mine wouldn't empty once because there was a kink in the pipe, something I always check for now!
Thanks for the suggestions for my surprise Christmas guest. I've calmed down a bit now, been shopping for bits and pieces and realised what an influence this thread is! I've included a pair of leather gloves and small wind up torch (which could be included in the teenage survival kit mentioned earlier) and an alarm clock which also shows the temperature and weather forecast! TBH he isn't too bad (I've been through the teenage phase with my own son!) he'll sit with his Dad and watch a football match with hardly a word between them... I suppose I should be glad of the peace and quiet!

Hi - all suggestions gratefully received no matter how obvious! I'm getting desperate now! No clean clothes left except summer stuff!! We will be layering up!

Yes I have checked for kinks etc and there is nothing. I have wrapped the pipe in fleece and poured about 8 kettles of boiling water on it  (£££££££££££££££££££££££) not to mention the radiator on in the shed (££££££££££££££££££) but its not budging.

It has either wrecked the washing machine itself, OR its frozen under the ground which is under paving slabs

Either way I am beggared until the thaw, and who knows when that will be. I will have another go tomorrow in daylight but not holding out much hope til it warms up.

Weather forecast this evening has suggested we may get another 6inches but I sooooo hope they are wrong and it takes a different direction.

    FED UP

Are you sure it is not a blown electric fuse or something???

Or has the electric switch/fuse tripped???

  • tomorrow is going to be such a strange day, freaky in fact. Full moon plus the winter solstice plus a total lunar eclipse starting at 6.30 am

I am lighting half a dozen candles tomorrow, to welcome the sun

I got the emergency kit for the car sorted out well in advance but realised that I could have done with a one-person portable kit to throw at DS1 when he left the house at -12 degrees at 7am this morning to attempt a 12 mile bus journey into town. At that time, the local bus company was saying that the buses weren't running. He managed to get one of the first that got through and if he doesn't stay with friends, he will try to do the journey back very late tonight after a party. People were stuck for hours on this route yesterday but he isn't at all worried about being properly prepared - I suspect it might be an age thing.;)

So, I reckon we could use something the size of a sponge bag that can get thrown in each of my boys backpacks containing: two spare pairs of socks (one can be used as extra mittens if needed), a bottle of water, chocolate/high energy snacks, one of the high visibility jackets and one of the space blankets from the car plus some spare cash. If it's in a zipped up container that doesn't take up much room and isn't heavy, I don't think I'd meet with much resistance.

Can anyone think of any other useful bits to add to a teenager-survival-kit to cope with a 'stuck on a bus for several hours late at night' or a 'needing to get out and walk home' scenario?

    Many thanks

It occured to me that a small torch might be useful. Also a phone card if the mobile is flat.I have a gadget called a 'plug and Phone' which lets you use your mobile if it's flat.I don't know where you can buy this in the UK.

Frugal hope you get your washing machine sorted out.

I'll do the same, I really liked your idea so decided to "borrow" it. :)

Frugal, hope tomorrow brings success with the washing machine.

My boiler has gone again. The condensation pipe is frozen. I need to get pipe insulation on the outside of it as this is the second time its happened but the pipe is at 1st floor height (it goes from my bedroom down a slight slope to just above my bath outlet) so I need tall ladders as well  Guess what the one thing I don't have it :mad: Will need to get in touch with someone about them coming out to do it. There's no way I can manage.

I have a temporary fix for now, but the quicker the thaw comes the better :(
