I've often wondered as an academic exercise how long we could survive on our freezer and storecupboard stocksif we really had to, and being practical, it's good to run everything right down every so often to ensure a regular stock rotation so that things don't get too out of date..

However, I don't think that's likely to happen in our household as my dear OH is manic about keeping us well stocked. One day I would really like to find exactly what's lurking at the back of our large food cupboard!. Unless we start being really disciplined about this it's not likely to happen until we get carted out feet first and some poor soul has the job of clearing the house out.! And I'm glad I won't be around to listen to all the comments like "They people must have been squirrels in a former life. Have you seen the amount of stuff they've got stored away ......:rotfl: (Oh dear, this is sounding just like my grandparents and parents. History is obviously repeating itself!)
Haha, I think that I must have been a squirrel in a former life! I have this urge to stock up but another part of me would like a more mimimalist approach cos I find myself looking at all the food thinking will I EVER get through all this! I have enough to feed a large family for several months but there is just me! Your OH sounds well organised though - lucky you! :)
I'm pleased I have plenty ... but why is it that I always end up fancying things I don't have in! :rotfl:

NualaB I have been watching live radar and it shows how the precipitation starts to spiral around a pivot. The pivot area is then pretty still and gets the most or the least, depends what is above.. The pivot area depends on the pressure and on the wind direction. Honestly it changes by the minute so the forecasters haven`t a chance

The met office weather warnings are based on ice and not just snow. Don`t forget that ice is worse in many ways

The swirl now appears that it will go around Ipswitch, maybe leicester and is heavily over s wales but it depends on if it is blocked in any direction ie sent north or south so very uncertain

edit: Ireland looks pretty clear but I think that it (the swirl) is picking up loads of precipitation as it sweeps up the channel towards the east. London and around could be hammered, maybe 6 o`clock ish

Thanks a mill Kittie! :T That radar site you use sounds brill and if I had the spare money I would subscribe. But every cent is accounted for so not an option right now.
What you said fits in with what they just said on the lunchtime news - you should get a job doing this!

Very true about the ice - when we had a foot of snow it wasn't too bad really. But it was the compacted frozen snow and ice that were a real killer. My road is on top of a hill. It is not much of one but enough to make it lethal when trying to walk down it when it's frozen!

By the way I have decided I will light lots of candles to celebrate solstice - I love the idea that the days will be getting longer after that. Next year I might make a real occasion of it and do a yule log and decoarate with greenery etc. But this year I will content myself with lots of candles. And I will think of someone for each candle I light - like my late Mum or my best friend in Australia or someone who needs good thoughts sending to them. Embarrassing question - is it the 21st or 22nd?

Thanks! At least it seems there were some grounds for my uncertainty!:)

I found this and it so it seems tomorrow night is my candle-lighting night.

    DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT

I knew this was going to happen :( My washing machine isn't working, same as last year when it was this cold (its outside in a brick outhouse/laundry area). I am so mad. I had meant to go out regularly and make sure it was ok but not been out there for a couple of days.

I have put the tumble dryer on in there in the hope that it will warm it up enough.... BUT now I am worried about water gushing everywhere IF the pipes are frozen and have split :(

Altho I am fairly sure its the WM rather than the pipes..... Fingers Crossed

I am right mad :mad::mad: It is frozen solid I reckon - I've had the tumble dryer going in there for half hour and am scared to go and look in case water is spewing out all over the place

Its costing me a fortune in TD electricity and I don't even know if its gonna work :(

OK, here I go to check

No water leaks.... But its still not working :(
  • help it along by getting a hair dryer at the pipes. it will defreeze anything gently. one of those old hurrican lamps in the overnight helps to stop stuff freezing. used to have to do that in our old outside loo!!!
