Preparing for winter II

Grrr seems DD1's wellies are too small - so much that they've now split down the back! So now I have to find some size 2 wellies - in this weather, with classic British panic-rush buying and lack of foresight by shops - means I've next to no chance. Maybe I could make her some out of old milk cartons? :rotfl:
Buying wellies at this time of year? You're more likely to find sandals and flip flops. I'm expecting my Spring/Summer 2011 catalogue to drop through the door any day now!0 -

Visited a school Mum on Monday (due to the fact her son has ben terrorising our eldest daughter and on Monday decided to pelt her with snowballs with grit in and rub her face with snow, so she had come home in floods of tears - she hasn't been back to school since so we don't know if the "visit" worked) but back on track she had had a Freemans S&S catalogue delivered and it was propped up the front door!!!Donna

Just had a lovely conversation on the phone. A few nights ago i decided to change to a different phone and broadband supplier (MUCH cheaper). When i phoned them the other night the lady i phoned at the company and i started chatting about the weather (it was a freephone number!) and how bad things are in Scotland where she lives and especially the difficulties she had in getting to and from the building where she works, which is in the middle of nowhere.
Well she telephoned just to finalise things so the process of swapping over can begin and we got chatting again and she said that she finished work at 10pm on Monday night and didn't get home till past 1am in the morning and that she could only get a lift for halfway to her home and she had to walk the rest of the way. Poor love!
This snow may well be a pain in the derriere, but it does bring out some genuine kindnesses in people don;t you think? Like all the people who stop to help others dig cars out or tow them, and those who knock on their neighbours doors to check on them and offer to go to the shop for them etc....and yes, even my little chat on the phone to this nice lady :-)Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

Afternoon all.. I live in Cheshire and we have had barely any snow
Feel a tad left out.
The news is talking of so much snow and the pictures are amazing its very cold here but we have bright blue sky's!!
I am so glad thought that I read this thread months ago... I am all prepared in any case
Been home last 2 days as full of cold and feeling really run down
I did however treat myself to an early Xmas present which has just arrived ... Some new UGGSGoal - We want to be mortgages free :j

well i WAS feeling toasty til i helped my daugther get into her eskimo gear as we call it and now i'm back in the house shivering away. the stairs are baltic i can only imagine how cold it is outside but she's wrapped up snugly and will come home if she gets too cold she doesnt' like the cold at all!
schools been off for 3 days running here, makes no difference to us since we home ed but i have agreed with her she gets the same days off as the kids in this area so that includes snowdays! she's off to some neighbourhood kids houses to have a romp in the snow.
i took her out on monday and we had several snowball fights and she did sledging. we attempted a snowman but the snow wasn't wet enough. we were going to go into town to pick up a new telly from argos (ours died and i MUST have a new one as half her xmas gifts are much wanted dvds or wii games!) but while the taxi could get near me i don't think they'll get into my street. fair enough on the way too argos (my knees are still killing me from monday i don't dare do the walk today) but they wouldn't be able to get me close enough to my flat with a big old telly so i'll wait a few more days. i would just order it from argos (though heaven knows when it would get here) but they only have stock available in stores now it won't kill her to read more
i decided to cancel my my heated airer from lakeland. despite waiting two+ weeks and it was then supposed to be ordered it finally turned to 'on backorder' on the page at 15 days so given that i have to unexpectedly buy a telly i'll just forgo it. i'm curious about possibly a small space heater that would take the edge off and help dry the clothes... i keep forgetting which type is cheaper to run? i figure if they aren't too dear i can just pick one up when i'm at argos.0 -
Can not believe that people have still tried to drive out to work when the road was impassible last night, these cars are now abandoned down the lane.
I can.
It's one thing not turning up for a 9 to 5 job, another if you are in the forces and don't turn up for duty. I guess the drivers were probably RAF personnel fearing a charge if they didn't get into work.0 -
Hi all -
been lurking here and got some fab ideas. Had one of my own - apologies if anyone else has beaten me to it - but see that lots of folks like me don't live anywhere near an Ikea for cheap fleeces re curtain backing etc.
Just an idea, but if you're looking for something to interline curtains with, how about using horticultural fleece? (the stuff you use to cover up tender plants during the winter)
It sells on ebay and is quite cheap for a 10 or 20 meter roll. It is very light and I'm sure you could just tack it or pin it behind your existing curtains....

for Britain, Ireland & EuropeWinter Dec to Feb inclusive in Britain and
Europe will be exceptionally cold and snowy –
like hell frozen over at times - with much of
England, Germany, Benelux and N France
suffering one of the coldest winters for over 100
years. It is expected that two of the three months
Dec, Jan & Feb are likely to be in the three coldest
for a 100 years (eg using Central England Temperatures). There will be some milder periods in which West
Russia may also be briefly milder. Ireland, especially
West Ireland will have some mild periods when the
rest of Europe remains bitterly cold. The timing of the most severe and milder spells and
details of festivals such as Christmas and New Year
periods will be available to subscribers to full forecasts*
which describe the whole winter in 24 sub periods (8 for
each month), each a few days long.Standard meteorology will consistently underestimate the lengths of cold periods and will grossly
underestimate the severity of blizzard and snow deluges at times. As last winter and for the first snow
deluges this winter** WeatherAction.com will issue timely advanced warnings of these situations to
help reduce public suffering and save lives.Despite efforts of Authorities it is very likely that the UK will run out of road salt this winter – as in the
previous two winters which WeatherAction correctly forecasted in the long range while the Met Office’s
prognoses dramatically failed***.
We hope this winter and this forecast (produced using our Solar Lunar Action Technique of Long range
forecasting) which relies on a scientific understanding of predictable solar-magnetic-lunar effects on the
Earth’s weather and climate - and is nothing to do with CO2, will encourage politicians to get a grip on
reality and end their support for the CO2 ‘hypothesis’ of man-made climate change which is failed science
based on fraudulent dataWe thank our sponsors who have made this public forecast possible including some anonymous, and:
