  • I went to my sons and his g/f rented house last night, they have no heating at all and about 2cms thick of ice on the windows:mad::eek:.

To save me from getting cold while their, i was dressed in a t shirt, a long sleeve top, a jumper TWO fleece coats, 2 pairs of socks, boots and jeans.......trouble was i could hardly move while i was driving thier :o.

Although i had 2 pairs of socks on, my feet still got cold, i have ALWAYS suffered with cold feet, even as a kid, so any ideas for what to do with my feet in this cold weather please, apart from chopping them off lol. I should point out 1 pair of socks were thermal.

    Thanks

Without ANY doubt I say 'Double-socking'.

I realised this a few years ago after suffering constantly cold feet since I was little. I could be boiling on the rest of my body, but feet were always like blocks of ice. :(

I have a sock collection to rival most women's shoe collection. :rotfl:

Thin Prim4rk socks underneath, thicker boot socks on top. Haven't had cold feet since using this method. In spring and autumn I wear those trainer socks underneath and thin/medium socks on top.

Only drawback is wearing holes in them, I just (untidily!) sew them up or if you buy Lidl's when they are out (hiking/motorcycle etc) they have reinforced heels and toes that really last. :T

I got DD1 into double-socking last winter and just this morning I have brought DD2 over to the dark side (she is wearing trousers rather than dresses to school now). :D

edit: after typing all that I realise you already do double sock!! :rotfl: In that case, what type are the socks and which go underneath?

    Thanks triticale :).

I just wear normal cotton socks underneath the thermal ones but they still get cold :(

Getting this winter storecupboard stocking up process right is a bit of a balancing art, isn't it?

My OH actually enjoys doing the shopping and he stocks us up for England.:rotfl:I can't remember the last time we ran out of stuff, but he obviously didn't learn his technique at any of the supermarkets who run a "just in time" stocking up mechanism so that you only stock up just as the shelves are running on empty. The other day I counted about 6 bottles of Soy sauce, 3 jars of Marmite, 2 jars of mustard, 2 jars of Bovril and lots of stuff we only use once in a blue moon.

The problem is that when you stock up like this, it's very difficult to keep track of what's right at the back of the cupboard which needs to be used up so that you can rotate your stock in a reasonable way.

How does everybody else manage it? We did have an inventory (once !) but we usually end up rummaging around until we find what we want, which isn't the most efficient way of running a storecupboard. But at least we won't starve if we're marooned in by snow for a week!

sb44, you need Vaseline. I suffer terribly with cracked hands in winter made worse by constantly washing up or cleaning something or other.

During winter I keep a tub of Vaseline by my bed (no jokes thank you!) and as I get into bed I slather the stuff all over my hands, especially knuckles, rubbing into any bad cracks. Not so much that theres chunks of it coming off onto the duvet though!

I then wake up with nice soft crack-free hands. It can take a couple of nights to get them sorted if I've neglected them. I've tried alsorts and Neutrogena concentrated stuff is good, but nothing beats the bedtime Vaseline :rotfl:

On the subject of vaseline. I was told by a fisherman that in the winter if you put vaseline on your face (cheeks, chin, nose) it keeps warm.

Yea me too have got skin like you, this is what I do when my hands are at their worst, I use neutrogena hand cream then I put my hands in plastic gloves and sleep in them.....:eek: yes its true I do, when you get up in the morning your small cracks will have healed and the larger cracks make a start to heal, plus your hands will be super soft..... but make sure you wear gloves everytime you use water, and always wear woolly gloves in the cold........

I do buy those boxes of very thin latex gloves, they are so handy and you can feel whatever your touching with them on,:eek: I know you lot are thinking "what the hell is shegar up to" but its true they are brilliant, plus they help keep your hands out of water.........:)

I do have some cotton ones somewhere that you use once you have moisturised your hands, I will have to go and have a search for them.

We have a snow day for the schools here today, although the schools let the kids get there then decided to send them home.

I have had to chase round texting teachers to find out officially that the school I'm dinner lady at is shut, as was only told by a parent, have had no phone call etc.

For my 2 boys alot depends on whether the bus company will run buses, if they don't they don't got to school.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman

Total chaos here. All roads in the borders closed or suitable only for 4x4 or HGVs, all schools off,

It was like that here yesterday - the children were delighted at the extra day off, and the golf course outside our front door was littered with snowmen :rotfl:. Unfortunately there were some idiots who really felt that they should drive and tried to drive up the road next to us, which is quite steep and was very icy. My DH (who couldn't get to work because the buses had been cancelled) tried to help one man by pushing his car. Actually I think his main concern was to make sure the car didn't slide down and hit ours which was parked there! The man had to just slide the car down and leave it.

Luckily today it's mainly gone. I hate ice. I can't understand how anyone can think strapping little blades to their feet and sliding around uncontrollably can possibly be fun.
