Do they really need to make so much fuss on the TV?

    http://www.itv.com/tynetees/fullprogramme/

They were carrying on about how hard it is in the rural areas, but one or two feet of snow is NOTHING in the rural areas. 5ft isn't all that rare (I'm 5'2") and if they'd bothered talking to the older people up in Redesdale, instead of the 40-50 year olds, they'd have been shown photos of coats hanging on the tops of telegraph poles while their owners dug down through 10ft of snow to clear the main road.

Seriously, it's been less that a week, there are no blizzards or drifting yet and most people still have electricity...

Must be a slow news week.
    Time flies like an arrow.
    Fruit flies like a banana.
    Money talks, but chocolate SINGS

I've just had to text my husband to call and get me some rubber gloves on his way home.

I can't do any washing up as my hands are so full of cuts and cracks, I look like I have been bare knuckle boxing! I always end up like this in cold weather.

Everytime I let the dog out I have to go with her and stand by her then pick her up to bring her back in, she won't come in otherwise as she keeps running around in the snow!

Hence I'm having to wash my hands more than normal.

Yea me too have got skin like you, this is what I do when my hands are at their worst, I use neutrogena hand cream then I put my hands in plastic gloves and sleep in them.....:eek: yes its true I do, when you get up in the morning your small cracks will have healed and the larger cracks make a start to heal, plus your hands will be super soft..... but make sure you wear gloves everytime you use water, and always wear woolly gloves in the cold........

I do buy those boxes of very thin latex gloves, they are so handy and you can feel whatever your touching with them on,:eek: I know you lot are thinking "what the hell is shegar up to" but its true they are brilliant, plus they help keep your hands out of water.........:)

No I agree with you Shergar. Since I had my second daughter in Oct 2002 I have really sore hands, expecially the knuckles, every winter.

We use latex gloves all the time, but mostly for cleaning up the garden after the dogs :(

  • We're out in the sticks at the top of a big'ish hill, I've been stockpiling to cover our likely financial situation but it was quite nice earlier to be able to tell my old Dad (we all live together) that I reckon we could last three months with few problems. Will be better if our Sainsbury's delivery arrives on Wednesday but we'll be OK anyway. Dad may have to get used to soya milk though unless the milkman can keep getting through. Note to self, get more long life milk for the "real" winter! Hope those buried under snow are surviving OK.

Sylvan, just wait till London gets an inch... the tv will go mad ! When this settles down I'm going to Costco to stock up on UHT milk. It's bound to be better than the dried stuff !

sb44, you need Vaseline. I suffer terribly with cracked hands in winter made worse by constantly washing up or cleaning something or other.

During winter I keep a tub of Vaseline by my bed (no jokes thank you!) and as I get into bed I slather the stuff all over my hands, especially knuckles, rubbing into any bad cracks. Not so much that theres chunks of it coming off onto the duvet though!

I then wake up with nice soft crack-free hands. It can take a couple of nights to get them sorted if I've neglected them. I've tried alsorts and Neutrogena concentrated stuff is good, but nothing beats the bedtime Vaseline :rotfl:

Thank goodness I read this thread many months ago! The weather has been awful here, but I have plenty bread and milk, hotwater bottles and my store cupboard is something I am quite proud of. The torches and candles are all set out, as the snow is melting slightly but I am concerned that if the temperatures drop and ice forms on the electricity lines we may be without power at some point. We have had thunder and lightening whillst it has been snowing - something I havent seen before! All the winter boots were set out, winter coats sorted out - the only thing I cannot dfind is a hat! First port of call tomorrow is to purchase one, as the car is now parked up for the week, and the wind is gusting here strongly at times. All meals for the week are in the freezer, and enough for 2-3 weeks also. Hope you all are well and keeping cosy,
    Every days a School day!
