We've woken up to thunder and lightening! No rain, just lots of snow, very strange.....

Yes we had it last night too! Don't know if it went on all night 'cos I slept through. Makes a difference when you're cosy doesn't it? Over 150 schools closed in this area apparently. More snow and drifting today, wonder if I can last another day without going out?
My sister lives out near Anguk and hasn't seen a car pass for 4 days:eek:

  • Our council website is down, so I am unable to check if the school is open - it robably is, the weather isn't too bad here, its the roads which are the problem. I think I'll be keeping the kids at home though I don't fancy driving, and am unable to walk that far at the moment - I would have probably had to have left the house about two hours ago anyway:eek:

BTW I put a handful of dishwasher salt down the outside gullies last night and down the toilets, washbasin etc. Thinking that it might help prevent freezing. Just thought of it because I had it in and thought 'might as well' :D Don't suppose it'll do any harm? Fingers crossed!

Well I was sick of the large water tray that I put out with mealworms in, freezing over so I sorted it today.

I found a Fray Bentos pie tin that I was going to keep to make my own pies in, filled it with fresh water and put it onto a wire rack, under which I had placed a lit tea light.

Because of the really low temp ie -5, the water stayed thawed and wasn't hot so nice splashy water for the birdies. :D

I have 8 chooks and have been having the same problem with thier water so thought this was a brilliant idea:A.....just 1 thing though, can they not burn themselves at all on the tea light:o?

Was doing a big catch up read, and got to 20th Nov, then read Frugal's post about lagging the outside tap. THANK YOU FRUGAL! I'd forgotten mine, but have now been out there (in the dark!!), and have lagged it with two old towels and a carrier bag, all held on with old tights waistbands. Hope it's OK, as like everywhere else, it's been absolutely freezing for the last few days up here on our hill. Hope I'm not too late - won't find out until the thaw!

    .

For anybody having to lan an outside tap I've got a feeling that you have to first turn the inside stop !!!! for it to the OFF position first, and then leave the outside tap in a FULLY OPEN position before lagging so that this prevents a build-up of any frozen water in the run between the two of them splitting the pipework if it thaws. I may have got this wrong as I know it's something my OH normally sorts out every autumn when we pack the outside hose away. He's not around at this moment for me to ask him. Can somebody confirm? (Must check this myself in case I have to be the one to do it next time).

We haven't got any snow here (yet) but definitely a time to stock up with matches, bread/crackers, Long Life milk. Sadly no pets at the moment so don't have to stock up with cat food, but have got plenty of bird food in.

Thats what I have done with our tap. I haven't lagged it cos if its got no water in it - there is no need to lag it - well that was my reasoning.

I have a poorly hubby at home today (it was his day off anyway) but he is refusing to go out - but we will need to do a walk to the local Co-op for cat food and to stock up on beechams powders sometime today!!! And he can walk to school with me later to pick up DD2 - the fresh air will do him good!

I've just seen a whole 5 snowflakes float down from the sky here in London. :rotfl:Snow tonight apparently, but they've been saying that for days. <rolls eyes>

Chicken casserole in the slow cooker. Heating off, but will put the timer on so when we return from toddler group this afternoon, the house will be nice and warm. :D But I will turn if off once we've warmed up with a cuppa.

The small boy and I will be cutting out paper snowflakes today. :D
