  • I have to say thank you to everyone on here, I have today used nearly all of my winter preps! In Cardiff, we had snow friday evening, since then its been freezing so there is just lots of frozen snow everywhere, went to put the bins out earlier & it was like sheets of glass out there!

So I said dont worry, iv got dishwasher salt to put down, amazing stuff, started melting the snow straight away which we then cleared with the snow shovel & put some grit down which id got from the box at the end of the road a few weeks ago :) Very nice to feel prepared for what it going on outside tho I have to admit im not looking forward to driving in it all week for work. Set to get worse thru the week but we have lots of food in, fresh milk, uht & dried....how prepared can you be? :) Such a nice feeling tho!

Going to put a few more fleece blankets up on curtains i hadnt done yet, got curtains for the front & back doors but cant work out how to put the poles up so for now we're keeping all the door shut & running thru the hall cos its very cold in there!

Hope everyone is keeping well & warm & be careful out there, its not nice!!!

Yes, that's the one! I have gone to their sister centre in Dublin (very small) to learn meditation. Always fancied visiting Samye Ling it but seems tricky to get to and anyway, funds are tight. And they will be even tighter once my next gas and leccy bills come in! But at least I'm warm.

Princess Kate, you sound nicely set up for being snowed in. I love that cosy feeling. :)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Well I was sick of the large water tray that I put out with mealworms in, freezing over so I sorted it today.

I found a Fray Bentos pie tin that I was going to keep to make my own pies in, filled it with fresh water and put it onto a wire rack, under which I had placed a lit tea light.

Because of the really low temp ie -5, the water stayed thawed and wasn't hot so nice splashy water for the birdies. :D
  • I have been complimented this weekend.

Here I am feeling smug because I, alone, put the curtain rails up and hung 3 door curtains on Friday, but to top it my daughter's friend came for a sleepover with her, and exclaimed to her Mum (when they came to pick her up after lunch) that I am "so organised, that they even have emergency milk!"

I hadn't told her so my daughter must have! I keep bottles of squash in the fridge so that there is always proper cold juice for the kids to drink, having it in sports bottles means they drink it better, thus keeping hydrated without me nagging, and she was wowwed by that too, and this forum has taught me about ensuring that I don't run out of milk. so thank you.

Economy; careful management; providence. Whether you call it thrifty or frugality it all comes down to getting more for your money.
  • my mum was in Birmingham this weekend for the "good food show" and she willingly nipped to Primarni for me as they have older kids and adult all in 1 pj's, like the ones that babies wear with the feet included.... They are fantastic and only £8 for adults.... so got dd1 a size 8-10 same for me and dd2 a 9-10yrs only problem is my daughters have their american dads canoe's oops I meant feet(did I say that out loud):o
so dd2's feet bit are too small, I cut the feet out of them, nipped upstairs grabbed her bootie slippers and am now sewing them in, JOB DONE!!! she will have plenty of growing room as the body is very generous..... toastie thrifty house tonight:T

I got a hell of a shock before. I was upstairs supervising DD having a bath & came down to see to the tumbledrier and there was a dripping noise. I feared the worst and wondered where I had a leak this time. Then I noticed that some newspaper on the worktop had drips on it. When I looked up my kitchen ceiling was literally dripping with condensation  I had to mop my ceiling dry! I've never seen anything like it since my old school was knocked down. Its a flat roof and I'm starting to wonder if maybe the roof is starting to go as it was only dripping in certain areas where I have problems with mildew growing :( Another thing to add to the "need to tell the landlady about" list. She's going to be sick of me!:o

  • Was doing a big catch up read, and got to 20th Nov, then read Frugal's post about lagging the outside tap. THANK YOU FRUGAL! I'd forgotten mine, but have now been out there (in the dark!!), and have lagged it with two old towels and a carrier bag, all held on with old tights waistbands. Hope it's OK, as like everywhere else, it's been absolutely freezing for the last few days up here on our hill. Hope I'm not too late - won't find out until the thaw!

Went down in to town today, and was surprised to find no ice. Had to be really careful walking when I got off the bus back up here, despite wearing my walking boots, which have sensible cleated soles..

Am quite cosy indoors - all the preps have been worthwhile (draughtproofing, extra curtain layers etc), have a hot water bottle under my feet as I sit here, and made a nice hot drink when I came in from outside. And I'm wearing lots of layers, including my thermal long johns under my trousers, and cosy slippers with sheep's wool liners. The heating's on, but only set at 18 degrees.

Thanks for all the tips everyone.

  • Well over the weekend I got the car new wellies (:D tyres to you and me) and windscreen wipers, £150 but glad I did.

There were reports of heavy snow, queues and abandoned vehicles (!) on the A1 as I was setting off home from OH's, so I took the longer route on the M1 which was fine. Bet those with 'stranded' vehicles had neglected their tyres or windscreen wipers...;)

Like an ice rink on the residential roads here though! Must be a good 2 inches of snow fallen during the day/evening.

Sat here a bit shivery, despite being in two layers of pyjamas/jumpers, slipper socks and fingerless gloves and with convector heater on. :(

Might grab a blanket and watch some CSI. :)

While typing this - just looked out to see an evil fog descending!!! Gonna be a cold one I think!!
  • we have snow falling here in St Ives Cornwall Yipppiieee, have you had any aliadds??? I've been doing my snow dance all night praying for it and my feet are killing!!
