Preparing for winter II

we have about 7 inches and snowing lightly now2014 = New Year, New Me0

Our bedroom normally stays quite warm and we still have our summer duvet on the bed. However, I've found that an unzipped sleeping bag makes an occasional useful extra bed covering on the extra chilly nights we're having at the moment.0

I want some snow! There's a lovely big park 50m down the road, would be perfecct for a snow ball fight!!Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0

There is at least a foot of snow lying here, it is cold but not as cold as yesterday but forecast is bad for the next few days.
Took dog out this morning and his little head was just about peeking above the snow, he loved it but we were only out about 20 minutes as didn't want him to get too cold0 -
Step away from that bath!!!! You DO NOT need a bath that much, spray a bit more eau de whatever on. Wait till spring.
now might be the time to try that thing where if you don't wash your hair for like a month it stops getting greasy thing
actually both me and the wee one need a bath today, i'm gonna suck it in and use the horridly expensive little heater in the bathroom to take the edge off for a wee bit. i'll let her have her bath first as there isn't a problem with the hot water there. then the room will be humid so i'll take my shower. the showers are fine in the summer but in winter no matter how much hot water i have in the tank the shower is pitiful so at least the room can be humid when i take my shower so i don't shiver! i've taken to quick sponge baths two days and washing my hair every third day in the shower as it's just too awful to deal with every day!0 -
Currently -1 here in suburban London and bright blue skies, was -5 at 9am this morning. Heavy frost overnight.
BBC and Met Office say snow imminently. Netweather says not until Monday night. Who to believe?
Heating was on from 5am till 8am this morning, and house is only starting to get chilly again now. When my washing has finished, I will hang it on the airer, and turn the heating on for a bit. Double use then! Little man is poorly with a cold. He's been sitting on my lap all morning, not eating or drinking much at all.
Managed to get a load of shopping yesterday, so we should be ok for a while. Have brought some UHT milk, a few tins of soup, smash, and tinned carrots, mushooms, peaches, and pineapple. Already have full cupboards and fridge/freezer, so will only have fresh bread and milk to worry about. Hopefully the milkman will be able to deliver.
Brought little man some more thermal vests. Just need to persuade him to wear them. :mad:0 -
sb44, I'm in the south. You see that great big empty bit above Hawick in the Borders area ? Well I'm innit !0

One of my friends post on facebook last night that he was considering doubling up on the doubling up of clothes to go to work last night (he drives a black cab) I told him to get his backside to @sd@ & get some thermals :rotfl: That's the mother in me I guess
Last night my heating kicked in at 1am as it was 15* in my bedroom  I checked on DD and she'd kicked all her covers off again, this is despite me putting a double quilt & blanket on her single bed  I change the beds today so I'll be adding another 2 extra blankets to her bed & tucking her in tightly! She's outgrown her sleeping bag & I can't remember where ours have gone otherwise she could have one of themI think I lent them to my sis but I can't be sure as it was at least 3 years ago that I last saw them. Anyway, she'd probably wriggle out of them.
She's out with her dad today, they were going to go geocaching until he spent the trip here in the cold. Now they're doing something else :rotfl: She's gone out in tights, socks, winter boots, jeans, tshirt, sweatshirt, padded coat, thinsulate hat (which is mine!) and thinsulate gloves. We couldn't physically get anything else on her. :rotfl: Bet she gets too hot now.Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
I think I may have just realised why it seems a lot.
Our central heating boiler is about 14 years old (according to the engineer), we bought the house 7 years ago so I'm not sure exactly when it was installed.
Anyway, it is the type were you HAVE to have both the heating and hot water on at the same time, you can't have one without the other so I suppose that raises the cost.
We can't afford the cost of a new boiler so it's something we have to put up with until it goes altogether then we may be able to get money towards a new one because of child and working tax credits.
My 30 year old boiler packed up the year before last and I had to have a new one.
The cost of running the old boiler wasn't much different to the new A rated one, and when I did the figures on it over the life of boiler counting maintainace and eventual replacement the new boiler works out more expensive by 30%.
It's easy to just think the boiler is cheaper because the gas bill is smaller, but there is more to it than that.
Hang on to your old boiler and be very happy with it, they break down far less often, my old faithful needed 2 minor repairs in 30 years.0 -

Another saucy minx out there I see!
I like to read in bed,but often find this tricky,as the wee cat Kira (when not sprawled across my chest) likes to curl up on my chest, paws tucked under, purring loudly of course, and so close to my face that we're practically nose-to-nose!
I have a tiny kitchen, and the door to the kitchen opens inwards, towards the kitchen. When the door is open, you can't access certain cupboards.I took the door off when I moved in.I have a beaded curtain up,which I've just changed for thicker one.Hopefully, there'll be less of a draft.
They've forecast more snow here today and tomorrow.0
