Preparing for winter II

  • We're all snuggly and wame here (the hound and I), and feeling rather smug at all the panic buying that's going on at the moment.

I've been stockpiling bread flour and plain/SR flour for a few months now, and also fresh and dried yeast, toilet rolls, candles and washing stuff.

We have a full storecupboard of tomatoes, pulses, pasta and rice and a full 7ft freezer with fruit, meat, fish and veggie alternatives. All our preserves are in the shed and we have homemade wine, heather ale and cordials to last us until the new year!

Oh how people laughed at me when I went bulk buying and dragged home the special offers; they also gawped when I spent all my spare time preserving and pickling over the summer and autumn and couldn't see the point. These are now the people who have run out of milk and bread, have had power cuts and are sitting in the dark.

I do feel for them, but in fairness, we had some severe snow earlier in the year, and it was then I started getting prepared for the next winter. I started reading this thread in July/August when even the OH though I was mad, but it's been worth it!

I've been round to the old lady who lives a few doors down to see if she needs anything, and have also had mum check with one of her elderly friends who lives on top of a hill to see if there was anything I can do. If they need it, I have offered to make fresh bread for them, and they can have some of our milk supplies too.

I wonder how long this can last where people are stuck and shops are closed/out of stock?

How deep is yours now Mar?

I think we've got about 6 inches which is quite a lot compared to what we usually get. it's so pretty - I think I might make a snowman tomorrow. :)

    I'm jealous! :D

Yes snow always seemed to mss Dublin - well there'd usually be no more than a sprinkling. I think last winter was the best snow we'd had since I was a child. I have such happy memories of that snow, what I remember most (apart from being allowed to wear trousers under my skirt like my friends even though my Mum hated it and then the school being closed) was the neighbours making sure everyone had enough of everything. I ventured to the shops today and checked with an elderly neighbour to see if she needed anything. She said she had already had 3 offers so it's nice to see community spirit is still there!

I think we're set to get a bit more too - am delighted! :j

i read that as 'will take more pics in the spring' :rotfl:

i think you would be buried by then if this keeps up!

i know we have at least 8 inches here probably more. my steps are starting to become one lol soon i'll just be able to walk out the door down a little snow ramp to the pavemnet :p

when i took the rubbish out today there was about 3 inches of snow on top and that was from last night so we have to have over 8 inches here but it's too cold to go out with a ruler :p

My mum has bought DD a sledge and a hat with flaps to cover her ears. DD is now pushing herself around the livingroom on the sledge while wearing her new hat...this is the child who has been off sick today due to being ill all last night and most of today :rotfl::rotfl:
