    Hi everyone
Posted a little while back fell off the wagon but now back on it - hopefully! I've just a quick question regarding tinned fruit. I understand that it is not superfree and has to be taken as a HEB, for the reason you may eat more BUT does anyone eat tinned fruit and count it as free. I don't really buy a lot of fresh fruit as it just goes to waste so I like to have tinned fruit in for variety without it going off.

I just don't understand how you can eat as much fresh fruit as you want but have to HEB or syn tinned fruit. I don't go mad and have 5 tins a day and always fully drain the juice off. Will it really make much difference? I would love to have somepeoles opinions on the matter.

This is a matter which frequently comes up and I can only give you the SW official line.

Tinned fruit doesn't have the filling power of fresh - it's soft and therefore easier to eat. It doesn't have the skin and therefore you're losing the benefit of the fibre in that.

The nutritional aspect of Food Optimising has been carefully calculated and, followed correctly, the plans work well. If you start 'tweaking' they won't work so well because, basically, you wouldn't be following the plan as it is set out.

I do agree that fruit is expensive and it's very wasteful to have to throw it away, but these days it's not frowned on to go to the supermarket and buy apples/oranges/pears/bananas etc singly and a melon, chopped and stored in a Tupperware-type box will keep for a couple of days in the fridge.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

a couple of quick questions. what flavours of muller lite are free?

and also i make a homemade root vegetable soup which is carrots, parsnips, swede, sweet potato onion, garlic, salt and pepper and veg stock cubes. can i still eat this? i dont normally put any cream or anything in it, so wondered if this would be ok for lunches as its yummy

The syn-free Mullers are all except the ones with a fruity layer and the cheesecake ones. The ones with chocolate sprinkles are free although I have to say I hate them, yuk!!

Your soup would be free and sounds lovely - enjoy :D

Can anyone be kind enough to suggest some ‘free’ or low syn foods (with syn values) other than the obvious fruit & veg that are available at Aldi? I’ve never really shopped there before but would like to more but only know the regular supermarket branded stuff.

    Thanks, C xx

    Hi Skint,

I've started shopping in Aldi more & more - things I tend to buy:

    * Cous cous - all flavours - 100g cooked 0.5 syn
    * Cottage Cheese - natural - Low fat balanced lifestyle 100g - syn free
    * Light cheese triangles - 1.5 syns
    * Fat-free natural yoghurt - 500g?? - syn free

Kidney beans in water - these are sooooo cheap (19p I think??) but the nicest kidney beans I've come across
Baked beans & spaghetti in tomato sauce - taste fine to me
Chopped tomatoes - lots of tomato chunks (unlike Tesco's value which is mostly water)

A big bag of baking potatoes are currently in the 59p offer - brilliant as I use a lot of these (use them to make wedges as well as for baked spuds).

One thing I don't like are the Harvest Morn cereal bars that I bought as an 'Alpen Light' replacement - yuk - very artificial tasting.

There's probably a lot more but I can't think of anything else atm.

Thank you very much sweet serendipity! That's great. I pass an Aldi every day but we're also having one built at the end of the road. I do find their fruit & veg very good value and seems to last a lot longer than Tescos or Asda stuff! :D

I agree its cheaper and for a HEB you get quite a lot in the portion size !!

I only ever have tinned fruit on the odd green days I do as I have 2 HEBs and have had tinned mandarins and tinned tropical fruit in juice. I have only had it as a heb (not synned)

The good thing about having tinned fruit on the green day is that if you dont necc have to have 1/3rd superfree, its a good filler that isnt superfree, but is filling iyswim. Saying that, its pretty obvious as youy eat it it is no way as filing as fresh fruit.

Other fruit I eat on green days are bananas and whatever superfree I have left! I wouldnt have 2 lots of tinned fruit on the same day mind you.

It is a lot cheaper though and worth doing the odd green day to save money in any case :money:

right i have made a massive vat of soup to have over the next couple of days for lunches but before i scoff the lot can someone check my recipe and if its ok you can use it yourselves lol. (i have to admit i have had 5 massive spoonfuls already so i hope its ok lol) i have based this on EE
    ingredients

    2 x onions (Superfree)
    6 x carrots (Superfree)
    1 x Swede (superfree)
3 x cloves of garlic (superfree)
    1 x sweet potato ( Free)
    3 x Parsnips (free)
    2 pints veg stock (free)
1 x tin of cannellini beans (free and also optional)
    salt/pepper to taste (free)

1 - dice onion and place in large pan with 2 squirts of frylite and sweat down

2 - place all other ingrediants in the pan with the stock and salt and pepper and bring to the boil

3 - leave to simmer for 45 min-1 hr 15 min until all ingredients are soft.

4 - blend with hand blender or normal blender.

this can be frozen for up to 1 month.

i so hope this is a suitable lunch for me as i love this soup the sweetness of the root veg gets rid of my sugar cravings lol.
  • Right I've decided on SW wedges and veggie sausages. I will admit that I did go onto the Domino's website and put an order in my basket :o but I decided to wait 20mins to see if I really wanted it before ordering. I decided not to waste a billion syns on it and make something myself, now that is restraint! :j

You deserve an award for that!!

I joined SW on 25th August and had my first weigh-in yesterday... lost 5.5lbs even though I had probably stuck to it for less than half the days as I was away for a hen weekend this week and went out every night of the bank holiday.... thought I'd join in this thread to try and keep my motivaton up. I'm chief bridesmaid for my friend on Nov 5th and I am determined to lose at least a stone so I don't feel like I'm ruining her photos!

    .

I hope to think like the slim and not get steadily fatter over a few years like I have done and do something about it when my trousers get tight!

It is always an option if needs be, so thanks.

PS have lost 2 stone since mid Feb this way.

i always used to work this way too, just cutting out chocolate or pudding when my trousers became tight, but when i was able to stay home i just stayed in my pyjama's and they have elasticated waist,so i never noticed how heavy i was until i had to wear 'real' clothes,i still have my clothes in my wardrobe, back then i had 'fat' day clothes and skinny clothes,i'm aiming to get back to my fat clothes, stay around for a while,it'll be nice to chat and see how you're doing, well done on your loss! :T:T 2Stone? WOW!!

sorry i came over all "American-happy-clappy" then,it doesnt stay for long ;)
today i HAD to have a sugar doughnut and one of those new Cadbury choc bars, but my period is due,or is that an excuse ;) i shall try to remedy that damage tomorrow with lots of fruit and veg and TONS of water! wish me luck?
  • well as predicted I did have the kitkat chunky... I have counted it as 11.5 syns which took me up to 17.5 syns today :-(

Will do better tomorrow. I am going to give myself a good talking to now.
