This is not something you need to worry about with any of Slimming World's plans if you follow them properly, adding a little Body Magic, but you can lose lean body tissue (eg. muscle) when you follow 'starvation' diets.

As has been pointed out many times, exercise will help to build muscle and tone your body and building muscle helps to regulate your metabolic rate, which in turn, helps your body to use more calories even when it's resting.

With respect (and I mean that, I respect your opinion), I completely disagree. Any diet that consists of a colorific defecit can have the effect of muscle tissue loss - because SW never mentions a calorie range to be hitting, it is entirely possible for someone to be following the plan properly and still not be taking in the required calories or nutrition necessary for muscle growth. It's the exact reason that SW wants you to eat Syns - to bump your calories up into a higher range.

Not only that, but SW is (whether it's marketed this way or not) usually used as a carb-heavy, fat-light plan - and it's very common to see people in here and at group mentioning that they cannot believe they can eat so much pasta and rice. Nobody ever seems to mention that they can eat as much steak or chicken as they like, since a lot of the focus is on carbohydrates. So we have a calorific defecit, that is made up of a higher percentage of carbs than protein. That's possibly the fastest way to induce a catabolic state, where we should in fact be aiming for an anabolic state.

It's a concern of all the 'plan' diets, not just Slimming World. My highest recommendation is that people do resistance training (weight lifting, machinised resistance) as well as their cardio sessions, and also ensure that 1/3 of their plate is protein based. If you can do that and stick to the SW plan you're absolutely laughing. Unfortunately too many people (and this seems to be a major problem with women in particular) believe that just because they are lifting weight they are going to 'get big'. This really needs knocking out of people's heads.

That's just my two cents though, of course you may disagree and as a consultant I understand totally. Everybody trains differently, so do whatever works for you.

If you do want more advice or to speak about weight training, you can read a little more here: http://www.weightlossforall.com/aerobic%20exercise.htm or PM me and I'll be happy to talk through it with anybody that wants help.

Lisa- the dark blue (regular) or light blue (light)??

He he! It's the blue cheese flavour one rather than the blue coloured ones!!!

My day will be either green or EE, won't know till I get to MIL's for tea tonight.....am saving my syns for then too as I'll def need them with her cooking! They're a family of skinny minnies lol!

Brekkie - rice, yogurt, mixed berries, banana
Lunch - lentil & veg soup, cracker breads (HEB), laughing cow blue cheese flavour (HEA), jelly (0.5)
    Tea - ?????
Snacks - apple, pear, satsuma, plums, nectarine (I probs won't eat all these but they're here if I need them!)

Ah ok, sorry Lisa - I have no idea then! :o

Wootball - I see where you're coming from, however I feel you have misunderstood SW a bit where you say 'Nobody ever seems to mention that they can eat as much steak or chicken as they like, since a lot of the focus is on carbohydrates. '
Because you can, on EE and especially on Red days, eat as much proten as you want - you can have steak and chicken for every meal if you like. I think that's how SW started, hence 'red' days are actually called 'original' days.

Personally, I stick to EE and green simply for financial reasons (i can't afford steak!), and have eggs, lentils, beans and chicken for protein as i undertand how important it is, I feel that's why the plan works - you can easily adapt it to your needs/requirements.
I feel your pain! :p my bf is exactly the same , hes tiny! but he eats so much, totally unfair!

I love the vibraplates! they are great tried my friends as she has her own and did the shoulder workout where you have to sit on the machine... now i bet everyone would raise an eyebrow to that but it only made me feel like i needed a poo! haha.:rotfl:

You can get them from Argos for £99, a bargain me thinks!

Yeah my OH is totally like that - eats twice as much dinner as me and polishes of a packet of biscuits, not an inch of fat on him - just goes to show some of our troubles are evolutionary/genetic (his family are all sooo skinny!) as well as behaviour-based!

the worst part of the vibro-plate was at the end when the trainer was doing a massage bit on my legs - pressing my calf muscles down on it really hard - unbelievably it really tickled!! :rotfl:I was literally lying on the floor screaming and giggling in front of a gym full of people!! :rotfl::o
I could be wrong, but I don't think fresh pasta is free, only dried  slap me if I'm wrong, I can take it.

    back to say:
Pasta fresh filled all varieties 28 g boiled 1 syn on green and EE, 2.5 on red
pasta fresh plain all types 28g uncooked 1 syn on green and EE, 4 on red
ditto 28g boiled 0.5 on EE and green, 2 on red

Yeah i wasn't sure about that, that's why I asked for the syns of the teaso/sainsbury own makes in the directory, coz presumably that'll already be accounted for in SW's calculations. No matter, I ate it, it was nice, but I wont be rishing to buy it again.

Not sure what kind of day to have today. OH is out tonight so i can have whatever i want for dinner. Might have a look on minimins (now that i know you can chose not to see the siggys - thanks Circes!!) and in my world of flavours book for inspiration. then will do a mealplan once decided. Meanwhile, i'm drinking a lovely hot pot of tea and eating a plum :D

Can anyone tell me how many of the blue cheese laughing cows you get for a HEA?

Lisa, it's 5 of those blue cheese Laughing Cow deli-light squares for a HEA. Are those the ones? They're yum! I love blue cheese! :D

  • I'm going to try a Batchelors Pasta N Sauce for lunch today, as it's been mentioned so much here.

I see the Macaroni Cheese one (on the SW website) is 2 Syns without the milk and butter. Are you all using your HE milk and omitting the butter? Is it OK without the butter?

I find the food optimising book a bit confusing as it says Pasta & Sauce, all varieties, made up as directed, dried,
    100g cooked 1.5 6.5 1.5

There is 108g in the packet, am I supposed to weigh it when it's cooked?
  • Hi all,

Some fantastic weightlosses this week, well done to all those who have lost. It is my WI this evening so I hope I can keep the loses going.

Can I ask, does everyone do exercise on SW or do you just rely on eating healthier. We were told to try and find something you enjoy doing, but there is no form of exercise I really enjoy doing (hence why I am at SW :p) I run up and down the stairs at work more often then I used to so I am doing something. What does everyone else do?

Tbh i don't really exercise but when i do i use my cross trainer, once i get going on it i can't stop its just getting the motivation to get on the bloody thing! haha

If you dont feel confident running outside or want to pay a gym membership you could always get wiifit or get home equipment such as indoor skipping ropes which i think Avon still do.

You could get a work out dvd, my friend has got a pilates one and said she was aching the next day so it must be good! :rotfl:

  • I don't like any exercise that makes me sweaty (yuk!) so I do aqua fit at my local leisure centre and walk more than I used to.

I think I will swim once a week as well.

    I think it helps.

Bectoria - i like to do exercise as it helps you tone as well as lose weight - I get bored easily tho so i have joined a gym so i can swim, do classes and use the machines and not just do one thing over and over. I also have a bike to get around which is fun and more moneysaving than a car!
Also i always feel so energised after just 30 mins of cycling, swimming or doing an aerobics class at the gym, that i find myself not wanting to reach for the sweet/carby stuff and enjoying my fruit and veg more.
