Without doubt this site has been an incredible money saver to me. The latest about Onetel has me confused. At one point Onetel was the answer to BT but over time, with competition, also became the enemy. I pay BT for the line (£35). I have Onetel as my registered company and pay them £1 for an international package (not used) and get Standard UK Talk thrown in for £0.0. This gives me free calls evening and weekends. I use 1899 at 3P per call to the US (used daily) and 18866 (1P per call) for all in country calls. To pay Onetel any money to get back as call credits would be futile. My total calling bill does not amount anything much.

    Am I missing something?

Well I've just tried to sign up (via Greasy Palm). I enter all my details on the OneTel site & it tells me there's an error - I may already have registered for an account - I never have.

I got through to an Indian call centre. Obviously they didn't know what I was on about re. Greasy Palm and said I could only have either the 1-year free OR £20 credit. Kept me waiting ages too when she 'checked with supervisor'.
  • I am an existing Onetel customer (though I use 18866 and 1899 for all calls) and successfully negotiated with OneTel's 'customer retention department' to get the free calls package. They were very reluctant (sorry, that is not possible) to give me the £20.00 call credit, which he said was only available if I applied on line. I pointed out that was not possible for an existing customer so he put me on hold for a while (it's an 0800 call so all it costs is patience!) but came back and offered £10.00 credits in April and May instead. He is going to call me in those months to make sure all is well with my account. He is taking care of my application so I need do nothing further.

I shall dip out on the Rpoints, but hey! I'm quids in anyway - thanks again, Martin!

Only that OneTel's StandardUKTalk DOES NOT get you free evening calls (only free weekend calls [you have to be wary of that too because OneTel's definition is midnight Friday to midnight Sunday]).

On the other hand, a quick flick through the list of free weekend calls I've made in the past few months shows an average of 30 or so each month - which would have cost 30p if I'd just stuck with 18866.

  • I pay a monthly amount which effectively becomes an account credit.

I would need to make a number of weekend calls to use up that credit, otherwise I'm actually down some beans?

No weekend calls made = money lost

    Am I missing something here?

Does one-tel provide the likes of call-barring from your phone? I have it activated on my BT line out of necessity, when the kids wouldn't heed my, "don't call mobiles without the prefix" request. Was costing a small fortune. I wouldn't like to save £32 by moving over, but end up costing myself more in the long-run.

    Cheers.

I have just spoken to OneTel CS and they tell me that they still do not yet have the facility to bar premium rate calls or international calls,so if you are on dial up internet and not with onetel as your ISP (in which case they will set up a firewall:rolleyes: ) your computer can get the trojan diallers and you could end up with large unexpected phone bills .

Another thing about OneTel, on 4th April they are changing their 0800 freephone number to an 0845 number

I looked at something similar. Being on OneTel's StandardUKTalk at the moment (no fee but free weekend calls), I'd have to pay £3.99 per month to upgrade to LeisureUKTalk to add free evening calls. That'd be 399 calls at 18866's 1p per call.

    No way.

Additionally, using 18866 means you don't pay if you don't use (e.g. if you're away on holiday).

I am an existing Onetel customer and successfully negotiated with OneTel's 'customer retention department' to get the free calls package. They were very reluctant (sorry, that is not possible) to give me Leisure Talk normally £3.99 per month for free. I was put through to a senior supervisor who initially offered me one month free but when i insisted i wanted to cancel she said because i was a long standing customer i could have it free for 12 months. She is taking care of my application so I need do nothing further.

I was just sick as this seemed another case of better deals for new customers at the expense of the loyal customer. Just shows what can be done by threating to take business elsewhere. Just need to workout how to apply this to "Sky", one of the other companies that seem to take existing long standing cutomers for granted.

    Thanks again, Martin!

Have just spoken to the Indian Call centre, now there's a surprise.
As an existing customer I am not entitled to this new offer as we have found out.
However, I asked whether if I cancelled my account and then rejoined in a weeks time say, would that entitle me to the offer as a new customer?
Absolutely not was the reply, it doesn't matter whether I left and joined another company and then rejoined OneTel in a years time, as far as their computers are concerned, I would be rejoining on a land-line number known to them, therefore as far as they are concerned, I am still 'on their books',
this seems to be a ridiculous situation to me.
Has anyone else had similar information?

  • Thanks for all the tips i am a real techno-phobic but ive managed today to take the one-tel offer and sign up to 18866 having got a bt account on our two phone lines. I guess i am one of the people that B.T. and the like make money out of. I am very nervous of all the bills. Could you tell me again having got internet access do i continue to use B.T. for this and is it really very much different doing this in the day to the evening rought cost guide anyone With thanks ;)
