Well, because my granary loaf sank, the edges around the top were quite crispy.

They were edible but I lost a couple of slices because of this and ended up putting the hard bits into a bag in the fridge until I decided what I could do with them!

So, the question is, what do other HM bread makers use their breadcrumbs for?

We were having delicious local lamb for lunch, so made dd a curried nut loaf. I used crusts and broken bits etc of bread for this. No need to fry onions according to recipe

    It was:

225g bread crumbs. I think the coarseness of the hm bread gave the nut loaf a bit of texture, it can be a bit smooth with shop bread.

225 g cashew nuts/pinenuts mixed (recipe said peanuts, but not keen)

1tsp each ground coriander, turmeric and cumin,

    100g finely chopped celery,

    200g finely chopped onion

    1 clove garlic finely chopped.

Bind together with 3 eggs. Shove in tin (says loaf, but I use a round cake tin and cut into wedges)

    Bake 30mins at about 170C

  • I have just made a pudding out of leftover breadcrumbs. I crumb old bread daily and freeze in a box. Today I whisked an egg with milk, sugar and cocoa powder and added the crumbs so its a spongey mix. In a pyrex dish I put leftover overrip pears, peeled and chopped and some sultanas and sugar, top with the crumb mix. Sprinkle with sugar and bake in oven for about 45 mins serve with custard. Just got it out and had a taste and the pears go well with the choc taste, it was something I just cobbled up out of leftovers but my family think they're having a real treat! yum!

Its good to have some breadcrumbs in as I like them in sage and onion stuffing too.

Living alone I never really have lots of breadcrumbs, however I collect them into a small plastic pot with lid, and when I make a bolognese sauce or a stew or a soup, I just add them in.

I sprinkle mine with cheese on pasta bakes, and mix with pesto as a topping for chicken or salmon.

Great, thanks folks for the tips, quite a few ideas there for me to try.

Until I get the hang of this breadmaking thing I may have a few breadcrumbs to use up.

    Ta!

Hi, sounds silly, don't have a BM, so maybe that's why I don't end up with loads of breadcrumbs, but I do always end up throwing away a slice or two of bread, can i avoid this by making breadcrumbs from them and how? Any other suggestions for this leftover bread?

    thanks
  • Put the slices, heels, whatever in a food processor or blender (you can even grate them) and put them straight into a tightly sealing plastic tub in the freezer. When you need them, knock the box a bit, the breadcrumbs will separate and you can use them straight from frozen...
  • hi,

I'm a bit new to all this.....

I had some bread that needed using up. I have turned it into breadcrumbs in the food processor.

what do i do now? toast them? freeze them? use them in what?

    thanks in advance

I mix mine with grated cheese & keep it in bags in the freezer, I use it to top fish pie, cottage pie etc.
