They freeze well.I keep a tub in my freezer and just take out what I need. I use them mostly for toppings mixed with some cheese or mixed with some veggies and used to stuff aubergines, courgettes, mushrooms and the like.

I don't see why you can't, or you could make veg pasta bake, or add sausages into this, mix the breadcrumbs with some cheese and top the pasta bake with that?
  • hi this may be going off topic a bit but a lovely dish i had once in an italian was basically pilchards in tom sauce, with a few extra tinned toms added, garlic, and a few dried herbs in and cheese on the top, bake for twenty minutes .... devine, rich and gorgeous, well its a thought for your pilchards!;)

    Things I do:

chicken kievs/nuggets (coat chicken in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs mixed with garlic/herbs/other flavourings)

    TReacle tart

Mix with grated cheese for tasty crunchy topping on pasta dishes (grill to brown)

mix with brown sugar for desserts like apple betty

    coat fish with them

Add to burgers, meatballs etc - you wouldn't know they were there and they bulk it out a bit, also make them more moist as they retain some of the juices I think

    make stuffing for roasts

toast then mix with cinnamon, brown sugar, put on top of stewed fruit just before serving

You don't have to defrost them before you use them. I keep a large tub in the freezer, just top it up with new crumbs each time I have a little end of bread that won't get eaten.
  • would be very nice, breadcrumbs then cheese, could add some dried herbs to the mix ...very nice.;)

  • Home made stuffing balls go well with any kind of roast. Chop an onion finely, good dollop of whatever herbs/seasonings you like, throw in some breadcrumbs, add boiling water till mix holds together and roll out to your preferred size with damp hands. Roast alongside the potatoes. Scrumptious as well as frugal and you can always add any little oddments of fruit you may have to hand - finely grated apple, most autumn berries - take a look at the Paxo type stuffings in the supermarket for ideas of what to add to vary the stuffing balls.
