What can I do with breadcrumbs?

You can definitely use them straight from frozen. By the time you've mixed in the cheese, if it's a topping, they will be mostly thawed. If it's a crumb coating, just bash the lump a bit and it'll spread around so you can use it.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000

I'm feeling quite ashamed of all the odd bits of stale bread ive thrown away when there are so many uses for the humble breadcrumb!0

Fry them crisp in olive oil with some garlic and serve with pasta- a Sicilian alternative to more expensive Parmesan.0

I made an interesting discovery last night. You can turn frozen sliced bread into breadcrumbs if you haven't any of the fresh stuff!Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000

ok i hate to admit it but tonight i had a disaster with my hm bread
we have saved up for agesss and a week ago bought a brand new (very swish) electrolux insight cooker :j after being without a cooker for about 3 years
anyyywayy.. tonight i decided to make bread in the oven rather than in my breadmaker and i duly mixed it all in the breadmaker only to discover i didnt have a bread tin:rolleyes: so i put the dough in the smallest baking tray i could find hoping to make a delish hm loaf, but the dough kinda spread out and i turned out a perfectly formed 1 inch high very long n wide loaf :rotfl: in hindsight i should of just made rolls!:o
this month i am time rich but money poor due to the cooker so decided to make something out of my frisbeei have just spent the last 10 mins with my trusty £5 tesco hand blender blitzing the bread in a pyrex measuring jug and have totally covered my kitchen in a shower breadcrumbs :rotfl: and now have quite a substantial amount of breadcrumbs in a plastic bag.
has anybody got any ideas what i can do with it all?was thinking along the lines of making a golden syrup tart but after that im stumped....please help to give me some inspiration...thanks angchris

Hi angchris,
Sorry to hear about your bread disaster. Usually I freeze breadcrumbs in a bag that I can shake and take just a few out as I need them.
There's an older thread with lots of suggestions on what to do with breadcrumbs so I've merged your thread with that one to keep all the replies together.

I wonder if we could start a collection of recipes that use up leftover breadcrumbs?
I know there are lots of you out there with breadmakers and its crumbly so if you are anything like me you must have lots of breadcrumbs! I freeze mine until I have enough for a recipe but sometimes I seem to have too much and would love to use them all up.
I'll start the ball rolling with breadcrumb topping for a fruit crumble, mix with sugar and top with butter.
Also use in stuffing (obvious one really)
Next on the list is breadcrumb cookies a la tightwad style (Amy Dacyczyn Tightwad gazette) mix together 60z flour, 60z sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp baking pwder, 1/3 cup cocoa,1/2 cup milk, 1 egg, 1 1/2 tsp vanilla, 2/3 cup marg (around 40z) and 9oz breadcrumbs. drop spoonfuls onto a baking sheet and bake for 15 mins at 350 c

A small amount in stews and casseroles to help thicken the gravy.
Scotch mince is actually a fairly standard mince dish but with added porridge oats as the thickenerHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
