Run ccleaner again ~
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks):idea:0 -
Although malware can slow down a machine and clearly needs removing, there are many other things you can do to significantly speed up a PC.
Just by doing the following, you should see a marked improvement.
1. Defragment the hard drive - Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmentor. Highlight your main drive (usually C) and opt to defragment.
2. Repair the registry using a mild cleaner - Eusing Free Registry Cleaner works very well http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm
3. Remove unneeded temp files etc. - CleanUp is excellent and much more thorough than CCleaner http://www.stevengould.org/index.php?Itemid=223&id=29&option=com_content&task=view (click on CleanUp452.exe). Opt to run the cleaner (not in demo mode) and let it remove what it finds.
4. Check how much RAM your machine has - should be a bare minimum of 512 MB if using XP and more for Vista and Windows 7. Preferably 1GB or even more. This one issue alone can make a stunning difference to PC performance. Start>Control Panel>System will show you how much RAM is currently registered.0 -
Hi, if you are trying to resurrect a 7 year old PC you would be better off spending a little and getting a much faster second user one. All this messing about and you will still have a slow 7 year old PC with out of date technology. If you want to spend the coming <however long you keep that PC> fighting with a slow system as a hobby then its ok - but if you'd rather spend that time on life then move on.
Your CPU, memory and hard disk are generations old. You can get 2GHz Core 2 duo based PCs with 667 memory and SATA 2 hard disk that will be at least twice as fast as your PC for about £100. Even PCs for £60 will be much faster than what you have.
What are the actual specs of that PC - I dont see them in the thread? e.g. CPU speed
One issue is you aren't actually running software from 2003 if you use the web - browsers are designed for modern sites that are far more feature rich now and noticeably hit the CPU of older systems.0 -

CPU is 21920 -
7 year old pc's are fine for most peoples needs, and aren't slow after a reinstall or bloat removal.!!
