slow pc should we buy a laptop - advice pls.

Options
We've had our packard bell pc for 7 years now and it has been running painfully slow for ages even after upgrading the memory so im just wanting some advice please.

I only know the basics on pc / laptops so would be so pleased by your advice and tips.

We use it mainly for family photos, email and internet social networks and games and I thought best to speak to you before I go to currys and buy a laptop.

Budget - don't mind paying more for something that will work properly.

As the memory and speed is the main problem, what do I need to look for in a laptop that won't run slow and will my cannon printer scanner work on a laptop?

thx for reading even if it didn't make sense!

May as well try and speed up what you have now

What size RAM does it have?

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

  • To be honest, laptops I find, are slower than my old pc.

If you do buy a new laptop/PC, please don't get it from Currys, Dixons or PCW!
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I have always bought direct (Dell and Novatech) but it will depend on your budget and particular requirements.
Almost anywhere is better than the DSG Group, even Aldi or Argos for budget machines.

    Thanks

im in the process of updating and scanning if that doesn't work then the budget will be around the £500 mark.

Can anyone help with the advice I got re MALWAREBYTES - i've updated but can't find the scaning option?

on the default scanner page it gives 3 options
    quick scan,full scan,flash scan

and below a button showing scan now
it should bev the page it opens on?

It will also help to clear out all old files and get rid of programs you don't use. Also run disk cleanup and defrag.
