Ella - you might not be able to claim income support as a lone parent until you get child benefit as you know.

In the short term until that is sorted out have you thought about claiming ESA as being not fit for work.....I'm sure that you are under an lot of stress at the moment, a word with your doctor might produce a sick/fit note for anxiety/stress.

(and before anyone accuses me of trying to work around the system and commit fraud ask yourselves if Ella would be fit for work in these trying circumstances !)

No help to the OP but I hope this thread is a warning to other women who have the child benefit in their husband/partner's name. CB was introduced specifically so that the person with care of the child (usually the mother) received the money, rather than a tax allowance on the man's income. Letting the father claim CB just puts the financial situation back to the way it used to be and is pretty daft.

I was wondering why CB would be in the man's name?

It can be paid to either parent, but logically it should be paid to the parent who may be staying at home whilst the other parent goes to work. So the parent at home gets contibutions paid for their pension IIRC.

  • I'm baffled as to why people were recommending the OP go into a refuge.
All she needed was a bit of money, not 'refuge' from an abusive situation.
I understand Domestic abuse covers the financial side of things but seriously??????
