    On the PCOS subject.......

I've just been prescribed Metformin and I'm hoping to have my first period in 8 months soon.

For those that have been prescribed this before how long have you waited before you've seen some kind of effect?

I'm really hoping that this works for me and that once my periods resume I also ovulate. That way I wouldn't need to take clomid which I understand you need to be BMI 30 or under before it can be prescribed. I've got quite a few stones to lose before that could happen :(.

On the weight subject I see that you should try to follow a certain type of diet. I've seen conflicting info - from no carbs at all to eating only complex carbs/low GI. Anyone found a diet that works.

Now that I'm reading into things the PCOS symptoms are all starting to make sense. I've been tested for diabetes in the past as I suffer with my blood sugar levels. I'm also tired a lot of the time and do suffer from low moods. It seems to me (although I could be wrong) that these are symptoms of insulin resistance which hopefully the Metformin will help with.

I've been on it about a month now. I think it's just starting to settle in now, and I'm mainly basing that on the jump in weight loss in the last week (8.5lbs in a week, when I've not been that good and can't exercise!). I am still in the midst of a long cycle though so I can't help you as to cycle-regularity improvements.

    Me too :o

My nurse simply said drink lots of water, avoid processed stuff, avoid lots of sugar, go for more natural alternatives. Doc told me (based on my situation, noone else's, this is not medical advice ;)) to aim for 1200calories a day.

I personally would strongly recommend cutting out as much processed/pre-packaged food as possible to begin with - I have found that the more I eat the more I want of those types of (largely unhealthy) foods. Once we started making pretty much everything from scratch, we both found we wanted/craved them less. This helps greatly when you're trying to stick to a low calorie diet.

I've just been lurking over on the WTTC thread and one of them pointed to some free booklets about TTC and pregnancy so I thought I'd link them here too :) (she couldn't do it herself as she's too new to MSE to post links)

Here's the link :) Scroll down a bit to see the list of what's available. There's also a downloadable pdf of "Top tips for healthy pregnancy" if you want to check it out too.

ilovecushions- I can see you are having a mammoth cycle as well, is that normal for you?

Still no sign of AF, think i'll see my doc next week if it still hasn't arrived as i've heard on here there is something she should be able to give me to start it!?!

I keep forgetting to temp, I only remembered that first morning and now I only remember once it's too late and I have woken up/started talking and it's too late. I really shouldn't have stopped!

Any testers this weekend? I need a BFP fix :D

    Good morning:wave:

My plan for the future is to improve my aging eggies:cool:
I've researched high and low on Google:D, and bought some supplements. Fingers crossed it'll improve next time:cool:

DH wants to try traditional Chinese medicine, so I'm going along with it too.
We've done all the tests, and the only thing wrong with us it my egg being the age I am:o We can't turn back time, but we could try something until our next IVF (DH was talking about 'next IVF', so I assume that means we are doing another:cool:).

Looks like your body is thinking what to do next. Ov or not to ov, that is the question:D

I do Atkins like ones for lunch, and cut down on carbs for dinner.
Haven't eaten crisps for ages, but had some choccies yesterday:shhh:

I need to lose some weight (am at the very top of the healthy range and want to get down to the middle - so want to lose 10-12lbs), and so have been doing a bit of research into losing weight whilst TTC. I'm also a bit of (lot of!) a geek and am really interested in nutrition so any questions feel free to ask and I'll TRY to help! :D

Obviously, if you've got a lot of weight to lose, you'll want to get rid of it as quickly as poss whilst doing it in a healthy, controlled manner. The last thing any of us wants is to deprive your body (and potentially a bean) of all the nutrients that are vital at this time.

I've read quite a few articles about low carb diets and on balance I wouldn't recommend a very low carb diet to anyone who is TTC. Having said that, many of the carbs we eat in the Western diet are refined, over-processed and not all that great nutritionally! So there's no harm in cutting down on those. Eating more complex carbs is really good for your body, and should help you lose weight too as you will feel more satiated afterwards, therefore consuming less. A "low-GI" diet basically means cutting out refined carbs (e.g. white bread, white pasta, potatoes, crisps, foods with added sugar, etc) and eating more complex carbs (e.g. wholemeal bread/pasta, sweet potatoes, wholegrains, lentils, oats etc).

Personally I still eat potatoes and occasionally small amounts of white pasta, but go for wholemeal bread, wholewheat pasta etc most of the time. I don't really think of it as a diet as such, but then again the thought of "being on a diet" just makes me want to eat chocolate! :rotfl:

About 2 years ago, I lost a stone, and found that the single thing that helped me most was to weigh all carbs! I hadn't realised how big my portion sizes were, so was inadvertently eating loads more calories that I thought. If you weigh out cereals, pasta and rice, you'll prob find that the recommended portion size is less than you currently eat.

The other thing is exercise - not only will it speed up your weight loss (whilst enabling you to eat properly), it will make you physically and mentally healthier, and much more prepared to face pregnancy, child-birth and child-rearing! :j I'm not saying go to the gym, necessarily - even walking for half an hour a day (if you don't already) would be a start, then gradually build it up from there. You'll find it really satisfying, I promise :) Make sure you find a form of exercise that you enjoy and that you can fit into your day-to-day life - that way you will be more likely to keep it up long term.

Phew - sorry, that turned into a mega post. I hope I didn't come across as preachy or condescending - was just trying to be helpful! :o As I said, nutrition (and exercise) is something I'm quite into, although I must admit that whilst I know what I SHOULD be doing, I don't always do it (hence needing to lose some weight!) :p

In other news, CD17 and still no sign of ov :o I hope it happens soon but equally it would be good if it wasn't today as DH is away but he is back tomorrow so we can get some BD-ing going on! :T

Well done QQ on the PMA, you sound like you've been on the case with the old research! Chinese medicine might do the trick - they've been doing it for thousands of years so there must be something in it...! (as long as there's no endangered species being used, tut tut)

Right, I must stop procrastinating - it's a beautiful day and I have a garden that needs me!

Thanks BB. To be honest that's the appraoch I was thinking of taking. I have a lot of weight to lose so need something that's long term and healthy. I therefore don't like the idea of the Atkins but something like the South Beach approach sounds good as like you said you still eat carbs but you eat the right kind.

I don't want to follow a DIET though as my mind has a way of really messing with me when I'm "on a diet" so I just want to find out a good way of eating (like the South Beach diet which follows the low GI food principle) and then follow that in a more relaxed/healthy lifestyle way.

Exercise wise I'm going to start going for walks and then probably start swimming again.

Half the battle is getting up the chops the fight another day, imo, and to come up with a plan. It makes me feel less out of control anyway. Let's hope this works :)
Looks like your body is thinking what to do next. Ov or not to ov, that is the question:D
Let's hope it decides on Ov! Temp has dropped a bit this morning, and CM is a bit more stretchy, but I took loads of acidophilus last night, including right before I slept (trying to counteract the affect of the antibiotics on my digestive tract!) so it could be that

I'll jump on DH later either way ;)

Got to go to Niece's birthday party today...she's having a "makeup party" (she's 8) and I'm supposed to be applying said makeup. To say I was looking forward to it would be a lie :p I need to find her presents and card yet too!!:shhh: Oh and wrapping paper...
