Congrats on the job offer MW and I hope the CRB matter works out for you.

    We've all made mistakes!
  • Rang the main man today and....no answer. Which isn't a bad thing, as I've come to learn that he never answers his phone -but he usually calls back, except not today. Oh well, wont read too much into it, as I'm sure he'll call when he gets round to it. So sorry but haven't got anything to report as of yet.

Went swimming tonight and bought some black mirrored goggles, that's 2 nights in a row I've been now and football tomorrow night, will be fit as a fiddle soon! :D

I've also found a good money saving tip which most of you have probably already heard about but....if you get medium cut bread, it lasts longer than thick cut and thus saves you cash!! :j

    You're learning MW ;)

Do you go past any supermarkets/Spars on your way home from work/swimming/football? Sometimes worth a look at what they flog at the end of the day. I've not paid full price for bread in months - get it for about 30p a loaf from the local Spar at about 7pm :D

I've also had cold meat for works lunches, half price, and half price fresh chickens from there as well - £1.36 each which I can make it last all week. God I sound like a right cheapskate :o

Edit - notice in your sig, you're creeping nearer to the magic £1k :)

  • Ha ha that's cool. I don't think your a cheap skate! I'm going to check out my local supermarket tomorrow evening ;)

Well observed about my signature...I put another £114 into my ISA on Monday as it was my payday, so getting there bit by bit. However, I transferred the money on Monday evening and it still hasn't cleared yet...strange. It's had 2 and a bit days. And this is the first time I've transferred from my new Santander account so I hope it is ok. The details of the receiving acc. were definitely correct as I checked and re-checked...

Maybe Santander don't do faster payments to your receiving bank. Halifax to Nationwide is the same for me. Takes 3 days normally.

....and remember many still count days as ' full working days' when it suits them. So, a txn effected Thurs afternoon MAY not show up until the following Wednesday. Public holidays can make things worse. It's a shabby practice, but...
I do tfrs online and this works well. It's my local Natwest staff who I also prize: they've been supportive and kind from Day 1 for me - and I have v.v.little to live on. They make no Bankers' Bonus sums from me:-) Also, txns like this are instantaneous; there is no need for them to be otherwise.

Good luck mw - I may pop in from time to time over the next 7 weeks, but will certainly catch up mid-September, by which time I hope to be reading of you becoming an old hand at the new job.

  • Hi MW, I haven't been around much lately but I took a quick look over the past few pages to check on how you've been doing & I don't want to come across all poncey or owt (you know me, harder than She-Ra's bumcheek;)), but the progress is startling & properly good to see - Like when you don't see some mate for months & find out they've changed loads since you saw them last, & no-one else notices because it's gradual. :p

Anyway, glad to see you've been doing alright - I read about the issue with the CRB check, best of luck with that phone call is all I can say.

I mean, almost every kid/teenager at some point has got done for nicking stuff, so would it be better just to ring him as above but try & close down the conversation about what & where you gone done for nicking, and concentrate more on how your attitude has changed since then, that you went back & repaid in full for what you nicked & apologised face to face.

    Something like;

"I prefer not to go into details if you don't mind as it was a childish, stupid thing to nick & I felt ashamed of myself even before I got done for it - It was a stupid teenage dare & I'm embarrassed even to talk about it now I've grown up.

"I owned up to what I'd done, I went back, apologised & repaid what I took.

"To be fair to you, the guy who I'm hoping to work for I will go into details if you press me as I gotta be honest with you, but personally when I come into your interview room I would rather talk to you about what I can do for you constructively like, because I'm a worker & I put that childishness behind me a long time ago...."

So yeah, ring him, be direct & to the point; Explain quickly that he'll get a CRB hit, tell him the basics of what it was for & don't let the conversation drag out into "erm"s and "so, um..."s.

Steer the conversation to the topics you want be just being brief and businesslike in how you talk, apologise for calling him in his personal time, but you felt it proper to speak to him in advance of any lengthy search, and get off the phone sharpish before he has time to formulate too many questions, but o/c be polite at all times and *do* be honest if he does wish to press you on it.

Imo he'll think better of the person who had a bit of balls to tell him, but also, it means that with any luck when you sit down for the interview, you'll only be talking about *positive* things, because you already shut down the conversation about the CRB-hit over the phone.
(dirty tricks of the spin-doctor! ;))

Anyway, best of luck however you go; As it turns out you never know for sure why you did or didn't get a job - My own (which I may well be made redundant from soon, I will update you at some point in the future) it turns out the interviewer gave it to me because in his words, I was the only one who said I'd work Satudays.. :rotfl:

Nope they don't. I've recently opened a Santander CA (to get £155 incentive) and most of my other accounts are with the Halifax. Santander advise that transfers to other banks take upto 4 working days although the funds leave your Santander account immediately. It's pretty pants. As I have multiple accounts for different purposes, I keep a spreadsheet to keep track of it all so I can tell in advance how much I'm going to need to move from Santander and when......but not everyone is that @n@l to spend time faffing with spreadsheets.

Some great advice on here regarding the CRB check. I agree - upfront and being honest is def the best thing. But personally, I would avoid using words such as Nicked or Stolen, during that conversation.

I guess you already know - we're all rooting for you ;)

Hee hee, good point CG o/c use vocabulary to taste, if I were offering advice to a mate in the room I would talk to him in such a way, but of course you're right about choosing your words.

When talking to a potential employer you use professional language - Of course being at ease, & a comfortable person to be around is a good thing, but at interview stage imo employers want to see you can pull off being "the professional", you (hopefully) have all the time in the world to develop a casual, easy-going relationship with your boss.

Best of luck MW, CG's not wrong, I really hope it goes well for you.
  • Thanks again guys, some great replies there.

I got the call from the new job today and I told them what I had done in my previous job. He said it isn't related to going into schools/working with vulnerable people and that the CRB check is to do with the schools really. He also told me that a caution means f. all. However, he did start to sound a bit withdrawn as I explained what the caution was for, but....he said he will call me on Friday to let me know where he is so that I can go and see him for a chat. So to me that says I havent got a red light...yet. Still on tenterhooks
