Donnie - can I just check first? Is it ALL the add-ons I'm disabling i.e.:
ones that have been used with IE?
ones currently loaded?
one which are run without requiring permission?
and downloaded ActiveX Controls?
If yes is there any way of disabling a group at a time - I only seem to manage to do one at a time and there are a lot! I've downloaded IE8 and will do the Windows Updates in the meantime.Marg0 -

Just the eighteen in the screenshots. You'll have to do them one by one.

TBH Ladywriter1968, either will do. Personally I recommend ccleaner.
Pro cleaners can irreversibly and completely destroy an operating system in a millisecond if used by inexperienced individuals. The reason most techies advocate ccleaner is that its benign, meaning that you are unlikely, even if you do something really stupid to break your O/S and even if you do its reversible with ccleaner.
I hope this helps your understanding, just make sure when you install it you untick the Agreement to put in the optional Yahoo! I agree Richie - and I'm sorry - it must be like pulling teeth helping folk like me but there's just absolutely no way anyone with this level of knowledge would get to the same point without someone talking them through it step by step.
I have noticed an awful lot of queries re slow pcs though and did wonder if it was worth having a sticky on some basic procedures to follow - is there not one because everyone's problems could be so different? Is that why?Marg0 -
Disable them all, unless you specifically use any one of them. If we need any one of them again we can re-enable easily.
After doing this, open CCleaner and Run Cleaner again and then go to Tools > Startup.. Click on 'save to text file', and copy the contents of the file here. I'll let you know which you can disable.
What you need to do is to download and install the updates for Vista via Windows Update. You are on Service Pack 1 when it should be Service Pack 2 and Internet Explorer 7, when it should be 8.
Sorry - having problems with internet connection last couple of nights.

Hey don't apologise it was not a criticism. You are correct every machine is different, every operator uses the machine for different purposes, and every owner has a different capacity for understanding what's been said and undertaking instruction. The language used by techies is also a problem, it's very functional and uses terms that are often times not understood. Hardly surprising as they are not part of everyday speech.
There is no reason however for not having a stickie providing it is (1) simplified (2) generic and (3) non-contributory.
The fact of the matter is if people contribute to a stickie it will soon become a messy contradiction and because of software changes will quicky become out of date. I think you answered your own question in your first sentence when you said "" someone talking them through it step by step ""
This step by step, one on one approach is the only one where "" an individuals capacity for understanding / remote learning "" can be taken into account. Thankfully there are many here who can provide that service in a diligent manner.
Hope this helps your understanding !Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. You can disable all, except these two for now.
Yes HKLM:Run Windows Defender %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide
Yes HKLM:Run RtHDVCpl RtHDVCpl.exe
If you like the Windows SideBar to start up automatically, you can leave that one enabled.0
