Closed would be tempted to suggest avast instead of mse/defender in low ram/slow pc situations. ;)

Have you got some figures for memory usage for both?

I haven't checked but imagine MSE would use less.

Avast (97.3%) also had better detection rates and speed than MSE (96.3%) in the Feb av comparatives test.

I'm amazed by those results. AVAST 5 it is then.

Historically have had good results with AVAST.
Wrongly assumed that it would have more processes running utilising more RAM.
  • AVAST downloading as I type - 76% done but still 21 minutes to go! (Signed up with Plusnet - don't groan - best of bad bunch - TT, BT {I know Plusnet are part of them} Sky and Virgin).

Will have to leave rest till tomorrow night now and downloading the service pack till the weekend cos it takes so long - sorry this is such a slow process - I literally only get a couple of hours or so on here in the evenings at the moment.

    Appreciate your patience though.
    Marg :)
  • Ok slightly stuck now.

Installed AVAST and ran a scan with it - took ages to do the full scan so had to abandon it as it was keeping me awake after I went to bed - ran it today instead while I was at work - took 7 hours altogether! It found 6 infected files so have deleted them.

Did a scan with Hijack This but can't find QuickStart to post a log - I'm going wrong somewhere - can you help?

    Getting Started
Download and install HijackThis. You will need to download both the Installer and Executable files.
    1. Download Installer
    2. Download Executable

Once installed, open HijackThis by clicking Start > Program Files > HijackThis and click the button labeled "Do a system scan only".

Once the scan is complete, click the AnalyzeThis button. A web page will open containing helpful information regarding HijackThis.
Note: Once the scan is complete, the scan button will read "Save log". You may save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file, it will open in your system's default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad.

How to generate a startup list log file
Open HijackThis by clicking Start > Program Files > HijackThis > HijackThis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
Click the "Generate StartupList log" button and a warning box will appear.
Once you click "Yes" to continue, the log will open in your system's default text editor.
  • Thanks Donnie. It was coming up with 'not responding' last time and the 'save log' bit didn't come up. This time same thing but I got the 'save log' - here it is:

You can tick and fix all references to Yahoo, Google and Windows Live including the Search Enhancement Pack., unless you expressly wish to keep them.

There are some Services that we can change to Manual, but I won't bother with those for now.

Perhaps you can reboot and post another log to confirm. Also let us know how it is running.
