I really enjoyed the programme but I thought the hidden design cake task was a bit much for the first round.

I'll have a check. It might even have been Farmer Boy (the one about her husband) but I can't swear to that.

I've just found it mentioned in 'Little Town on the Prairie' page 106 towards the end of the 'Blackbirds' chapter.

eta I agree with you possession about the hidden design cakes.

Are you another one like me who loved these books as a child? I've read them a couple of times as an adult too and won't part with them :D
  • One of them is Ripe Tomatoes with Sugar and Cream.Apparently at the time, tomatoes were more tart and needed sugar.

Most fruit was probably more tart (i.e. actually tasted of something) in those days.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

I read all of them a few times as a child and reread them last year.I had to buy them again,as I know longer had my old ones, but it was well worth it.My favourite is 'The Long Winter'.They really make me aware how much is taken for granted nowadays.I intend to hang on to them this time!

Tomatoes taste of nothing these days unless you grow your own.

Most of those showstopper cakes were amazing - my favourite was the 4 and 20 blackbirds cakepie though.

    Mine too! Incredibly clever!

My 13 year old daughter and I love baking so we watched the programme with noses pressed close to the telly. Fabulous!
Can´t wait for next week as it`s bread. I have just taken some Norwegian recipe “boller” out of the oven and the kitchen smells divine!

I love it. Currently trying to keep myself of Amazon as the book is on offer, had 2 new cook books delivered from the book people yesterday (one of them Paul Hollywood). Most of the cakes looked really good but to be honest the odd one was shocking. Im probably biased because i don't like tomatos but the tomato topped topped cake looked shocking and the lady that was sent home last night I was shouting at the telly 'don't put the rum babas in a bain marie'.

Mind you with Paul and Mary watching over I think even some of the most confident home bakers would struggle, I think I would. The kids love it as well, last year it was repeated on a Sunday morning, Hope they do it again this year.

I've got an Amazon voucher burning a hole in my pocket. Very tempted by the latest book :D

I'm loving this series, I've not seen previous ones. I've been inspired to bake bagels today for the first time.

Thanks for the reminder about the Little House in the Prairie books. I think these might make a good Christmas present.

I really enjoyed the second episode.

I have made bagels once before.I didn't get them quite right, but they were edible though!:o Plus a bit tricky to make in a tiny kitchen. It'd be nice to try them again though.
