Did anyone watch this tonight? I just got home so have recorded it and am watching it now, looks really good so far. I'm delighted to see Mary Berry in it - hopefully she'll have some good tips for us :D

Did it go over any more practical, every day type stuff as well as fancy cakes? If it did, I'll have to make DH watch it!

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

I watched it. . About 10 contestants had to bake their "signature" cake - things like marmalade loaf, lemon drizzle cake, and some fantastic brownie meringue thing... Yummm. And so on. Then everyone had to make a victoria sponge. And then a chocolate celebration cake of their choosing.

I enjoyed it... And was thrilled to learn that the reasons why my cakes 'peak' is because I over work them!!!
    I love surprises!

I just felt so sorry for the bloke who had a dip in his marmalade loaf and then the judges were quite mean about his beetroot and chocolate cake!

I forgot it was on, so shall watch it later.

I've been meaning to try beetroot and chocolate cake. I'm currently munching a slice of chocolate courgette cake. The courgettes give it a lovely moistness. You can't taste them, so it's a good way of getting fussy eaters to have some veg!

There seemed to be a fine line between 'under-mixing' and 'over working'.

I felt sorry for the chap whose tried and tested marmalade cake let him down.
I did wonder if unfamiliar ovens had been a problem.

Chocolate courgette cake sounds lovely, any chance you could post the recipe? I'm always after ways to get some sneaky veg into DH!

I felt sorry for the poor bloke whose marmalade cake sank too. I agree it was probably the unfamiliar oven but he just looked so devastated :(

I've made quite a few using different recipes and tried them out on the folk I work with, the best one that tasted least of 'soil' according to one tester was this one, I also put a rich chocolate ganache on top http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/food_and_drink/recipes/article2181551.ece

The River Cottage brownies were like liquid so I didn't try them again but that could just be my oven as anything with a large area like a traybake never seems to cook through

The BBC Good Food blitz and bake beetroot cake is also very good but very chocolatey, not really one for the kids unless you have something like ice cream to cut through the dark choc taste
  • I watched this on the re-run last night, it is fab! Can't wait for next weeks programme.

I've just been to the BBC website for the recipes. There are only seven recipes listed but fortunately the one for the layered lemon drizzle cake is there. I wonder if they will list the others or are they saving them for a book!?
