Having recently flown Ryanair and watched person after person have to measure and weight their hand luggage and then pay extra to put it in the hold ....... I wouldn't risk it!

Ditto, Don't risk it Stansted to France yesterday, all hand luggage weighed and measured, great entertainment for us 'regulars' but a bit of a s*it for those you don't read the several e-mails Ryanair sent telling them the MAXIMUM sizes for their ONE piece of hand luggage.

IT'S ALSO HIGHLIGHTED IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR BOARDING 'CARD' SO NO EXCUSES REALLY, it says in big yellow letters against a dark blue background

    WARNING 1 CABIN BAG ONLY 55 X 40 X 20 CM (MAX 10 KG)
HANDBAG, BRIEFCASE, LAPTOP, SHOP PURCHASES, CAMERAS ETC. MUST BE CARRIED WITHIN YOUR 1 CABIN BAG.

We had bought these to use as hand luggage: http://www.sportsdirect.com/dunlop-trolley-case-00-709003.

The handle made them fractionally too big for the basket, so we took the handle on the top off. The pull up handle is still useable and if it has to be carried there is a handle on the side. Its not worth taking chances, I have seen so many people being stopped for too large bags or more than the one hand luggage allowed.

Do Ryanair make their hand luggage dimensions just a tad smaller than standard bags in order to catch people out ?
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

    The answer is:

    There is no "catching out".

Servisair (or equivalent) are paid 40% of any charges they can levy to customers on behalf of Ryanair, by Ryanair. This is why they are eager to enforce the rules.

Ryanair hand luggage dimensions are the same as lots of other airlines - so if Ryaniar are trying to 'catch people out', so are lots of other companies.

If anything, it's the baggage manufacturers who are at fault - they can't make bags within what is an accepted size.

Are they? The standard size is 56x45x25cm - which is used by many of the legacy airlines as well as Easyjet.

You're right, the 55 x 40 x 20 size related to when I was searching for suitable hand luggage several years ago.

Ryanair, Easyjet, BMIBaby, Thomson & Monarch were all 55 x 40 x 20 but some seem to have upsized to the 56 x 45 x 25 you mention.

Apart from Thomas Cook who have an appallingly measly 43 x 28 x 23.

And Virgin Atlantic are 56 x 36 x 23, so not too generous there.

So I still stick with my statement that if Ryanair are trying to catch customers out, so are other airlines. :)

not to !!!! on your chips or anything, but Virgin Atlantic allow you an EXTRA piece of hand luggage (a la handbag, laptop bag) AND hold luggage.

Not really comparing apples with apples there.

    Easyjet 56x45x25cm
    bmibaby 55x40x20cm
    monarch 56cm x 45cm x 25cm
    virgin atllantic 56x36x23
    Flybe 50 x 35 x 23

Put simply, Ryanair's policy-making goes something liek this:

"Will this policy decision increase profitability? Yes? Well hell, put it in!"

If you are handy at DIY a tip would be to remove the solid bar that holds the wheels in place, this can be done by sawing off the exposed end with a junior hacksaw.
Buy a nut and bolt similar in size to the removed bar and when getting off the plane simply re attach the wheels.
2 nuts on each bolt would prevent the nuts from working loose or wrapping the threads with PTFE tape( 20p a roll) would do the same thing.

It seems a shame to buy another case if you have one already.

Just thought, do you think I should go on Dragons den? I could offer a wheel conversion service at all major airports ( just like the clowns with the cling film machines). Think I will call it " just in case". If I charged a fiver and did 1000 case a day I would be well rich!
On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.
