KEEMA CURRY
Keema is Hindi for minced meat. Keema curry also sounds more exotic than minced meat curry.
Serves 2 to 3
INGREDIENTS
200g of new potatoes
1 clove of garlic
2cm (1 inch) piece of fresh ginger
2 onions
1 tablespoon of oil
1 teaspoon of chilli powder
250g of minced meat
200g (½ a 400g tin) of plum tomatoes
1 tablespoon of garam masala
½ a teaspoon of ground turmeric
50g of peas
METHOD
Wash and scrub the potatoes, and chop them into 1cm (½ inch) pieces. Peel the garlic and chop it into tiny pieces. Peel the ginger and chop it into tiny pieces. Peel the onions and chop them into tiny pieces.
Put the oil into a saucepan on a low heat. Put the chilli powder, garlic, ginger, mince, onions and potatoes into the pan. Cook for about 30 minutes until the mince is an even colour, with no pink bits. Stir frequently to stop it sticking.
Open the tin of tomatoes. Put the juice into a bowl. Chop the tomatoes while they are still in the can (it’s easier than chasing them around the bowl). Put the chopped tomatoes into the bowl. Put half the chopped tomatoes into the pan and save the other half.
Add the garam masala, turmeric, peas and water. Stir thoroughly.
Bring to the boil, then turn down the heat until it is just boiling (simmering). Put the lid on the saucepan and cook for 15 minutes. Check the water level from time to time and top up if it starts to dry out.
ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES
Use minced beef, lamb, pork or turkey, whichever is cheapest. If the pack is a bit less than required, make up the difference with some finely chopped mushrooms or grated carrot, added at the same time as the meat.
Both the peas and the potatoes are traditional ingredients. You can omit either, but not both. If you omit the potatoes, increase the quantity of mince and peas to compensate. Use fresh, frozen or tinned peas. Use fresh or tinned new potatoes.
The quantity of chilli powder above makes for a medium curry. For a hot one, increase this to 1½ teaspoons.
For a mild one, decrease this to ½ a teaspoon and add 100ml (½ a 200ml pot) of yoghurt 5 to 10 minutes before the end of cooking. Add ½ a teaspoon of mint sauce to the leftover yoghurt to make some mint raita.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -

This is my fav choice to cook with mince!!! If you want to warm it up a bit add a cinnamon stick and for flavour add a couple of bay leaves. Tastes good the following day too with some chapaties or even pitta bread. Enjoy!!At least the fish fingers are still frozen, that's what I keep telling myself (Truly Madly Deeply)0 -
DP has always hated mince! He was force fed it as a child in his early years at school and it has put him off it completely.
Only recently we went to a family event at my brother and sister in law and they served Thank Pork Larb which is pork mince. DP loved it!
I was surprised as I never thought I'd see him eat mince and secretly pleased as I love mincer (plus it's quite cheap). I've made the larb dish a few times now but I was wondering if anyone has any other ideas?
I'm guessing that as his hatred of mince is more psychological than anything that the traditional meals I love like Shepherds pie, lasagne, chill-con-carne and mince and tatties are out. So does anyone have some less traditional recipes they can think of?

We use lamb mince to make Koftas. I'll try and hunt out the recipe before DD wakes up from her nap but it's just lamb mince with garam marsala (I think!) and some other spices shaped into patties, fried off and then served in pittas. They're delicious!0

Burgers, meatballs, meatloaf, keema curry, stuffed peppers (stuffed with a mixture of rice, mince and onion), burek (a kind of filo pastry pie stuffed with mince etc.), or for that matter, a "steak and onion" pie with the "steak" being minced.

Ive never heard of this, so just looked it up and discovered that its something I made a few months back thinking I was being really original and that I made it up myself!! I didnt know it was already an established dish.0

Bobotie or moussaka. Is it just minced beef your OH doesn't like, perhaps he might accept all the usuals with minced lamb, pork or chicken/turkey?0
