wishingonastar wrote:this thread has fascinated me. I agree with squeaky above that you can't please everyone, all the time. However, although i enjoy the posts on old style, and the threads are without a doubt quite useful in the main, I avoid the daily threads, as they all seem to be very exclusive, and i don't feel welcome, plus i don't really feel there is anything in there that is "os". However, for the people who use it and enjoy it, it would be a shame to lose it for them, like has been mentioned for some they are a lifeline, providing chat when maybe we don't get out and see people, but maybe something needs to be changed to make others feel more welcome, not sure how, but on the odd occasion i've posted on it in the past, i've felt like i've walked in on a private conversation, you know like when everyone stops talking. i hope you can find some sort of compromise to please everyone, for those who love the daily thread, i'd hate to see it go, i'd just like to feel more welcome, and maybe others would too, or maybe its just me.
best of luck,

Hi wishing,
I used to feel like this - but I really don't think its the case. Just persevere, keep posting and people will get to know you in no time.
I, for one, would love to get to know you better.

I loved the daily thread, as many people have stated above, it felt like a good old chinwag over the fence. I did feel that at times the personalised responses to everyone - the long list of names and personal comments - could get a bit tiresome but I chose to just skip over them.
However, at the same time as finding it potentially the friendliest of threads - i found that it was actually the coldest and most unwelcoming. Its natural for like minded people to flock together and i think its impossible to avoid cliques forming as thats human nature - but to people who were not a part of that group, it could feel very cold in the daily thread.
I couldn't agree more and don't post on there for that reason. It's not a personal dig at anybody on there at all but just a general impression I got from posting on there a couple of times and the lurking that I sometimes do.
Saying that it obviously provides a good support network for a lot of people which is very positive.0 -
scottishspendaholic wrote:Maybe so - however does it really matter? Let people post where they feel comfortable...
I just think it makes the forum really *exclusive* and *cliquey* if there start being too many rules and regulations and it will actively discourage new or unconfident posters...
It really pees me off when I'm told off for doing something on MSE - I'm an adult and I come here voluntarily - and I'm an active and, I hope, useful member of the community. If I ask something that's already been asked - so what? I've not been around as long and often just glance in and out when I have time.
I find this attitude really frustrating.

Sorry but yes it matters to me if I see someone being given perhaps the wrong advice where they could get better advice in the correct board.
Apart from the fact that Martin and the team spend hours researching articles for the main site there are many very knowledgeable posters about all the boards and I just find it frustrating that questions are perhaps posted in the wrong place when they would get a wider audience in the correct board.
Our duties as Board Guides are to point users in the right direction for the best answers, we are not moderators the Forum Team are there to handle that0 -
Gosh , I really didn't mean to come over as exclusive, but I can see how it might sound. I was just speaking on behalf of all those who like the daily thread and as I'm one of them I used the word we've.I'm really sorry if it sounds cliquey
I've been posting now for 9 months, and it was a while before I started contributing to the daily thread as I did indeed feel that I was butting in on a private conversation. But, once I took the plunge, I found people very friendly and welcoming.0 -
wishingonastar,
I hope you do post on the Daily Thread, in my experience everyone is welcomed when they join in. However, not everyone's posts are acknowledged, nor can they be now, given the length of the thread. I have only been posting for a few weeks but i have tried to post every day in order to feel one of the community, I think if you persevere youcan get there. It's just life, when you join any sort of group it takes time to build up relationships.

Not offended at all Wishing. As I say just take the plunge and I'm sure you'll find the daily thread a welcoming place;)

Regarding your previous post, yes, there have been times when ive felt ignored, one day someone said hello and listed names of everyone except me!!!!! But, i felt it was an oversight, not just a dig at me, and again, some of the people on the daily thread do seem quite 'clicky' with a couple of others, but do you know what, there are loads more who are welcoming and helpful!!!
I therefore agree with Squeaky, it would be terrible for a minority to shout down the majority, so i think people should carry on posting, new people should carry on and join in (including you wishing on a star!!!!), even if they havnt got much to say, it can mean a great deal to some, and our daily 'chat over the fence' should continue as it has.
Also want to add, Queenie, and all the board guides, i understand that this is an issue that had to be brought up, and hopefully all these responses show that the majority want things to continue as they are, maybe it isnt exactly how things started out, but like the best things, has evolved into something better, a daily thread for a community of like minded people (OS people!!!) who want to share their days, ideas and problems, and getting enjoyment, ideas and help in return!!!!0 -

I certainly don't acknowledge every post I read - I get little enough done round the house as it is :rotfl: and I don't expect my posts to be acknowledged either. I am sometimes a little taken aback by the long lists of names that appear in some posts, how do people remember everything and everyone! It's nice when you get a mention but it's fine if you don't.0 -
what an interesting discussion!
I very rarely look at the daily thread, because it is so chatty...nothing wrong with that, it's just not what I'm interested in. But that is why I think it's such a good idea to keep it, otherwise all the chit chat will creep into the other threads.
hope no-one's offended by that, it's not my intention!weaving through the chaos...0
