  • The one thing I do hope is that this does not make people reluctant to post on the daily thread!! Regular chatty posts are what give us an insight into each other.

I hope they won't mind me using them as an example but.......

Recently Kazonline took her courage in both hands and posted on the debt free board. Now Penelope-penguinn from OS offered Kaz private help. Having seen Pen-Pen's posts over some time I had built up a "gut-instinct" feeling that she was totally genuine and totally trustworthy. I had no hesitation in saying to Kaz " you'll be fine with Pen-Pen, she'll see you right" Not something I would say about every poster on the board. If we restrict ourselves too far this sort of insight will be lost.

Maybe not relevant to everyone but important, in my opinion!!
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

I agree that it can sometimes get out of hand, and I think a sticky with "etiquette/a guide to" for the daily thread would be a good idea. Especially if we could include a dictionary to all the shorthand we use :rotfl:

No offense, but while that may sound great in theory ... it wouldn't work and clearly hasn't ;):o :rotfl:

We already have a "Sticky" with Welcome to MSE Old Style (Read me first) and from threads posted, it's obvious it's not always read by new OS'ers or even some older ones. Within that sticky ... is a link to "Standard abbreviations used in Old Style" ;):D

Yep, but then the moneysavers arms was created for general nattering. There's no problem with chatting in a thread if it's relevant.

And I think this is the nub of it.

I'm risking being shot down again, but despite this thread, yesterdays daily still went into a dialogue between two posters which could and possible should have been taken to PM's because it is those going off on a tangent banters which, although very friendly between the two concerned, will make others feel the place is cliquey.
NB: My comments are not "personal" towards the posters, just expressing an example of the confusion over what may be deemed relevant and how it could have been dealt with by the posters. :)

I think there is a hard core of people on here who regularly post on the daily thread and if they all try to keep to the rules then any newbies that come along should follow suit. Anyone who doesn't know the rules and starts to do the things that are causing problems can be gently reminded to look at the sticky containing the rules. Surely, once this sticky has been created this is all thats needed?

So what are the rules and who made them up? Is this them -

    1) Nobody start the thread toooooooo early

    2) Only stick to OS topics

    3) Don't get too chatty and form friendships, heaven forbid we might upset the few that find it cliquey. To the majority of us who don't feel that way. Tough.

    4) No personlised messages allowed. Say hi and bye to all.

    5) No long and rambling posts allowed. Were not interested in your crappy day. Keep it to yourself please. That's not inspiring our OS ways.

What a load of bUllsh$t.

  • I must admit I have read this thread with interest since it has started and have been wondering if I should add my two pence worth!

I am a relative newbie to the daily thread and as someone who works full time and studies part time my home time is precious. However I am and have always been old style to some extent, I cook everything from scratch, I’m trying to cut down on other aspects of my life, I clean using OS methods etc..

However (and I am not posting this for sympathy or anything else) I have very few friends outside of my family (which is very small!). This is not because I cannot make friends it’s just simply with the life I have I do not have the time. I feel the daily thread is a way of me getting to know like minded people online that do not judge me, I can pop in and have a catch up when it’s suitable for me and not everyone else and I don’t feel obligated to see the person on a hourly basis!

I will be the first to admit that as I am not home all day, I have no BM (couldn’t be trusted with one! Ummmm… warm bread!) my posts are more of a chatty style and as a side I post the OS stuff I am doing at some point today. I do at times feel the thread can be a bit clicky but then that’s the same with any new friendship, people who have known each other longer will know more about each other. But do I feel excluded? NO! I see it as if someone thinks what I have said is helpful in someway or they want to comment on what I have said they will, of not they won’t. It’s as simple as that.

I personally would be sad to see the thread change drastically as I would feel that I would be unable to post if we’re only to talk about all the OS stuff we are doing.

    There…. That’s my thoughts!

I used to feel the same way you do about breadmakers but to wake up to the smell of fresh bread that has been baking overnight is fantastic!

I use the BM to make pizza dough, jam and even fruit cake.

Dds love it when I make bread dough in the machine and then shape it into rolls or into a shape and cook it in the oven.

I had no idea how adaptable the machine could be. After a few disasters and losing my confidence I now (fingers crossed) seem to be on a winning streak with it.
Maybe you could borrow one to see how you get on - or else try car boots - some lucky so and sos got a BM for under a fiver and it had never been used!

Neither of the board guides are on line at the moment, and I don't want to tread on any toes, but I read the general concencus to be:-

    1) Please start the daily thread AFTER you've been to sleep, not before ;)

    and

    2) By all means to reply to any individual posts or posters who have posted earlier if you have something to add or respond to, but do not feel obliged to mention every single post or poster.

    and

    3) Do please feel free to join the Daily Thread. Of course many of us have known each other for quite some time and that will show through - but we DO welcome new posters and it's surprising how fast you'll become a "regular" :)

I won't press 'quote' as it would make this too long, but I totally agree, Tinkerbelluk and Aussielass!

So what is the outcome of all this then? Was it resolved in the end?
