Well done, Ticklemouse! Im glad you've made it clear what you personally have said and I agree with your points.

I think the daily thread is invaluable to a lot of people as a 'chat over the fence' thread and helpful to read what OS things others are doing because it spurs you on to do the same. I must admit, when I first 'lurked' on the Daily thread I thought it was a bit silly the way it was felt that you had to mention everyone that had posted before you and so I tended to only add comments to people who had put a point I wanted to add to.

I agree that you should have a 'sticky' with rules to show that there is no need to do this, as well as rules about when the thread can be started etc.
  • I think that Ticklemouse's PM spoke for a lot of people that remember the thread as it was just a few months ago. It was bound to get longer because there are so many new users of MSE and OS, I remember that when I joined there used to be around 50 people viewing OS at peak times, now there's more than double that.

The thing is, the thread has got straggly, what with all the acknowledgements etc and TM has it spot on that the newbies picked up on the thanks and comments and ran with it assuming that it was polite to 'nod' to everyone in the room and those that had already left it, if this was tempered a little the thread would be a little more succinct

As a newbie it would have been helpful to have been given some guidance on the daily thread - I thought I was doing what was 'expected'...

  • Ticklemouse, you give that kevlar back to the soldier or police officer you nicked it from this instant!!!! You really don't need it! Now the white vinegar you can distribute around us! Seriously, thanks for making your points clear and I wouldn't think many ( if any) will have a problem with them. I think in people's heads we were in danger of escalating it into rather more than it's turned out to be.

We do need to find a way to police ourselves, or be policed, to keep the thread a little more manageable, but hoping it won't need to be too prescriptive!!

Hope your mum is ok, don't want us ever to not offer support when peole are ill etc.

Thank you TM for being honest and upfront about what your complaint was, it makes it much clearer as to what the problem is, and i think most of us here will agree with you as to what the problem was/is. Im glad that the 'chat over the fence' wasnt the issue, and fully support the end to the 'mention everyone' posts (unless its for a special occasion, to offer encouragement or to commiserate (sp)).

Ah-ha TM, so it was you, was it? :rotfl:

I can see your point about cross-posting and personalized messages, though I have to say, I quite like 'em :D I can see how it can get out of hand though, how long would the thread be if the site's membership doubled?

I thought the PMs were complaints, yours obviously isn't so sorry for assuming :o

Also I thought it was someone who was new and wanted to change the rules to suit them. Have another hug hug.gif:o (No offence to newbies :o )

Maybe we should have a vote on whether we all find personalized messages annoying, and go with the majority? :undecided

Hats off to Ticklemouse for posting your PM.

I'm a relative newbie too and have to confess have felt somewat intimidated and left out on the daily thread too.

The length doesn't bother me, the acknowledgements did a bit as I just don't have the time to do them and felt bad but I couldn't really see a problem with it, each to their own.

I'm with Punky, some guidance would be good and I hope this will all blow over now. I love OS. Couldn't get on today and felt soooo lost!!

Now must go to put kids to bed.

  • Thanks TM for being honest about your intentions, and everyone else for sharing your opinions. :T

I love OS, in particular the daily thread. I have noticed in the past few months though thati start to feel more like reading the daily thread is a 'chore' as it's something i want to read, and enjoy, but is taking up more and more of my time.

As someone who works full time, this means that i am having to skip bits out on some days, feeling bad then for missing out on what has happened.

I think we could be a bit more sensible with it. One of the things that sometimes males it too long for me, is when the same person posts several times in a row within minutes of each other, when they could have used the edit function. Perhaps part of this has stemmed from the feeling that you need to acknowledge everyone.

I think this started round about when it was said oh - lets try and beat 100 posts today.

Perhaps part of the solution is the chat room thing that jo138 has tried to start, so some of the cliquey chat can be diverted from the thead??

I don't know what the full answer is, but i know that as a bunch of people, we all want the same thing really (a pleasant place to chat, and share lifestyle ideas/gain experience and support from other members now we don't all live on the same street as our family).

Hope i haven't added in a negative way to an already long thread.

  • To the newbies, believe me if Moggins is after you, you don't want to be acknowledged on the daily thread, isn't that right Snowy :rotfl::rotfl:

You'll find me waaaaaaayyyyyyyy at the back of the class :)
