If I could add another ha'pennorth - to classify people as newbies and regulars - where is the cut off? When do you graduate? I still don't post all the time - but don't really like the "newbie" term.
Sorry but I wanted to just add this as we're getting everything aired“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

Sorry for not posting earlier, sick mother took priority.
I have to say first of all, that I am one of the 3 who pm'd the BG's. As I write this, I don't know who the other 2 were as I am aware of several other OSers who felt the same as I did.
TM, I know it wasn't intentional but I'm so glad you waited to post because it gave everyone a chance to work through their issues and aspirations re the Daily Thread without knowing the real reasons for the original 'complaints'. In a funny old way I've enjoyed today on OS more than any other because I really feel it has given a lot of us a chance to have a say and I feel the sense of community spirit has just shone through which is really lovely to see.0 -

Unless I've dreamt the whole thing up (which I wouldn't put past me) Martin has a book out soon about the OS aspect of MSE, and I should think there will be quite an influx of new users as a result of it. Whatever the majority decide now, they could just as easily be in the minority camp a few months on (or have changed their minds entirely
)
This thread hasn't always made pleasant reading (especially re. poor Wishing On A Star) but perhaps it's been a blessing in disguise if it prompts some kind of Daily Thread guidance for all those newcomers about to descend, and prevents all the old hands from getting swamped. Perhaps it couldn't have come at a better time.Eek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -
Well done TM for that post - really brave of you. And extra special applause to Queenie for being the 'messenger' which, given the amount of criticism she has faced, was equally as brave. :TOnly 5% of those who can give blood, actually do!

Good Grief!!!!
I have had one hell of a day, I finally get to log on for a quiet half hour & I find that once again, as seems to happen about once a year in this place, the apple cart has been overturned, mashed down, turned to vinegar & everyone is having a food fight with the cores & coughing on the pips!
I'm going to try & keep this breif & to the point so forgive me if it seems blunt, it isn't my intention to single anyone out or offend.
Most of what I think has been said before, i.e don't start the thread at 12.01am unless you have anything to actually say, don't say hello to everyone in Christondom, etc etc. But 2 things have lept out at me which I don't think have been covered & I am going to say them, offensive or not.
Now I may have this wrong, but way back when......wasn't the point of the daily thread to try & keep the chattiness in one place & stop is seeping into other more factual threads? I am sure this was one of the motivations behind the original DT? As far as I can see, this generally works. OS is a bit of a anomolie (sp?) as it is almost a forum within a forum, a community of it's own which has evlolved out of the rest of MSE. So it is unique. Isn't that something to be a little bit proud of? & something to talk about, along with how many batches of bread you baked before breakfast & that little Johnny has chicken pox?Queenie wrote:The powers that be in MST, provide a free, moneysaving forum, free of ads, free of subscription for the overall purpose of saving *you* money. However, the cost of running a website isn't free when you are talking of the huge number of people who visit one of *the* most popular UK websites. It costs time in monitoring, it cost bandwidth and blah-de-blah.
For crying out loud, MSE ( in this case I mean MSE both the man:money:& this site) has just got a bloody book out of our board. A whole book out of just our board, not the rest of the forum! I am as proud as anyone of this, & I am thrilled that a charity will see the profits from people learing about our lifestyle. But Martin & MSE are hardly going to suffer by having their names on another best selling (I hope) tome are they?! They surely should be treating us like the champions we are & should cut us a bit of slack.
See, I told you it wouldn't be popular:rolleyes:
I think we need to apply a bit of common sense to the DT from now on & everything will be fine. Newbies will continue to be welcome but unless we appoint meeters & greeters than the odd done will slip through the net unfortuantley. I will continue saying hello to everyone collectively not indvidually and only acknowledging particular OS feats or specific notable personal circumstances not every single Johnny with chicken pox or batch of bread. That's not to say I don't enjoy hearing about every successful batch of bread or sympathise about Johnny with chicken pox and indeed I will continue telling you about my bread successess & Johnnys chicken pox outbreaks, just that I don't think we all need to post the same congrats/sympathies in every single post. I think the board guides deserve our limitless thanks & praise for a usually thankless task. And I think MSE needs to throw us a huge party for the book launch:D (we'll all bring a pot luck dish to help out;)).Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

Being a newbie, the daily thread is the first thread that I will go to look at, as I enjoy being able to hear about what everyone else is doing, and it does help to cheer me up a lot. However, I do know that I have started the thread at a very early time once or twice, but I promise it was because I felt I had something to say and to try and get myself motivated, and if I don't say it on the odd occasion that I'm awake very early I don't get anywhere near a computer until late in the evening. I hope I haven't caused any problems by doing this. I also know that sometimes my posts can run more to 'chat' as I'm still trying hard to get properly OS in my home life, so I would hope that someone would let me know if there was a problem with anything I had been posting about. I will try and curtail/edit my posting from now on.
I admire TM for letting us know her point of view, which I can totally agree with, and appreciate Queenie for raising the subject.0 -

Yep, but then the moneysavers arms was created for general nattering. There's no problem with chatting in a thread if it's relevant.0 -
I have held back from posting all day, as I don't want to offend/upset anyone, and also because I'm quite surprised at how massive and lively this thread has become.
I'd like to thank Queenie for raising the point - it can't have been easy. I'd also like to thank Ticklemouse for being honest enough to say she was one of the OS Three
I have been posting on the daily thread for about a year now, and I know it's just a forum, but it feels like home - it gets me through the day when I'm down, motivates me when I'm feeling lazy and inspires me to achieve more for my family.
I'd have to agree re the saying hello to everyone, I didn't use to do this, but it became a bit of a trend, so I felt I had to join in and do it too otherwise I might upset or "leave someone out", so on that count I stand guilty as charged m'lord:D It would be a bit of a relief not to feel you have to do it, and save valuable time too
It makes me sad though, to think that some people think they are being criticised/moaned at when I think the original idea was to *discuss* everyone's view of the OS Daily Thread to make it better for everyone.
I hope it gets sorted out soon.Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0 -
Yes the Moneysavers arms was created for general chat, no one is denying that, what we have discovered both here and in real life is that OSers are a pretty original bunch who don't seem to fit anywhere but with each other. I was here when the Daily Thread original concept was created by Queenie and for us it was a godsend, no one else wanted to hear about what we were cooking for dinner, how we were going to bottom the house because it was a pigsty but Old Stylers knew and understood completely.
I do understand and agree that all the individual mentions and the early starts were definitely changing the feel of OS, most of the time I don't bother with individual greetings and by the time I've meandered through 3 pages my brain has forgotten half of what was posted anyway.
I think if these two things are addressed, the Daily Thread put back to the way it was, then we arrive at a happy place again and yes, just in time for the new influx to begin.
And Thriftmonster - you can't be a newbie, you're too "regular" for that
edited to add, EL you cheeky monkey!! I'm coming with slipper in handOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

I've been on OS for a while now. It was the first forum I visited as it seemed an informative place full of information of how I could save money without cutting bills, taking into account of the old adage "Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves".
I try to post daily, but sometime I can't as real-life gets in the way :rotfl: However, even though I live in Liverpool and a member of the govening body at my daughter school I'm still isolated. I dont' have FRIENDS, I have aquaintences but not people who I feel I could nip down the local with
However here on OS I have those friends. I have people who I look up daily, I might not speak to them, or acknowledge them when I post in the daily thread but I notice whats happening in their lives. The over-the-fence approach made me feel welcome and I can "butt in" and rant, or put my ha'penny in without fear of being "shouted at". Sometimes it helps just to get something off my chest. I don't expect every post to be acknowledged and I've given up on the personal reponses due to the amount of time and space they take up.
The daily thread is the kick up the bottom that I need some days. I'll be reading about someone making something in particular for tea and it will remind me to get something out the freezer, or to put something in to cook. If it wasn't for this thread I would spend all day sitting at the computer messing around on forums rather than getting on with the housework or paperwork.
I agree that it can sometimes get out of hand, and I think a sticky with "etiquette/a guide to" for the daily thread would be a good idea. Especially if we could include a dictionary to all the shorthand we use :rotfl:
Right, I'm off, but will be back tomorrow to read with interest the outcome of this threadCreeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0
