And I think this is the nub of it.
I'm risking being shot down again, but despite this thread,
yesterdays daily still went into a dialogue between two posters
which could and possible should have been taken to PM's because it
is those going off on a tangent banters which, although very
friendly between the two concerned, will make others feel the place
    is cliquey.
NB: My comments are not "personal" towards the posters, just
expressing an example of the confusion over what may be deemed
relevant and how it could have been dealt with by the posters. :)

Was the above aimed at me talking to Penny Pincher about her
    dragon?
I used that as an example, but as I stated it was not 'personal' :) It's the principle.

If you can put emotion to one side and see it from a more practical point of view it will hopefully put things into more perspective.

You have both read this thread and joined in discussing the various issues people have raised over the length, content and perceived 'exclusiveness' of the daily thread.

The dialogue covered posts #96 - #106 of which you addressed 5 consecutive posts directly to PP and PP posted 5 regarding the dragon. Nine of those posts were about swearing.

Depending on a users setting they may have their page views set at 5 posts per page, or 10, or 20, or 40. In the 'dragon' example, you can see that it could have covered as little as a quarter of a page or as much as 2 full pages. Add into that, email notifications when a new message is posted and that would have meant 10 email notifications to each and every subscriber of the daily thread just for a conversation between you and PP.

It may seem inconsequential and harmless fun, but if you take a broader view, and accept that people coming into the thread who are unfamiliar with the "etiquette" of the daily (to coin someone else's phrase) and take their lead from the examples of previous threads, they too might feel it's the 'norm' to carry on a one to one conversation over 9/10 consecutive posts.

However unreasonable my comment may have appeared when I suggested it could and probably should have gone to PM, if you bear in mind that the daily thead has a large number of posters and if, by the example set by yourself and PP, we all chose to follow suit what would the daily thread look like then?
I could decide to have a one to one conversation with say moggins covering 10 posts, in addition to yours and PP's - so now that's 20 posts only concerned 4 users (4 pages max, 1/2 page min and 20 email notifications) and then Aussielass decides to have a one to one Penelope Penguin - so now that's 30 posts on just 6 users (max of 6 pages, min of 3/4's and 30 email notifications) and so on and so on, Or, perhaps it's ok if only 2 do it? In which case, who decides who that two for the day are?

No one is saying you can't respond to another poster, but if an ongoing dialogue of banter covering several posts is what you feel you need at that time, is the daily thread the place for it? MSE has provided a means of doing that, the PM facility :) That is why I said it could and probably should have gone to PM, it's what it's there for "Private Messages" - messages which don't concern others or to have a chat with a fellow MSE'er.

I'm aware a number of people have taken umbridge over my comment yesterday, yet we're all grown ups and should be able to understand that this is a message board. The daily isn't set up to please any sole individual (new or old) but for a community of like minded others. As grown ups, we should be able to accept that, as a community, surely we compromise for the good of all.

I'm guilty of replying to each and every individual; I've learned that there are a number of our community who found that offputting, excessive and have expressed their views. Out of respect for our community, I no longer do that. I do comment to a few if I have something to say in response and I'm making a post anyway. I've compromised for the good of all.

Ultimately, if you can just put emotion to one side and consider the broader picture, all that's being asked for is that we use the facilities we're given for their intended purpose.

    Let common sense prevail! :)

I deleted it PP, I did'nt want to be shot down in flames, I have enough agro in my real life and I don't want/need it on here, here was where I felt I could express myself

age, please. Your post was directed to me; it was directed to me because of my comment.

To now post that you feared I would shoot you down in flames and I would cause you aggro is unfounded and unfair.

We're all grown ups and hopefully can discuss this? It was obvious that you didn't understand where my comment was coming from and I've taken a goodly amount of time this morning to explain the broader picture so that you will *not* feel any negative emotions from it.

For the third time (the original post, my response to it and now this one) it was not personal!!!!

    To everyone else:-

In the past few days, I have managed to upset several users. That was never and has never been my intention; it's not my way - but I do accept that, intended or not, it happens. I'm sorry it's happening, but

If members are feeling upset and taking things personally that were not intended, deciding not to post any more and making assumptions based on my words, then that saddens me. I can't take responsibility for how you choose to feel, but I do feel saddened by it because it is an extreme stance to take when all that is being discussed are a few changes to *improve* the functioning of the community.

By the same token, if this thread has meant that we now have others who feel they are able to join in and be a part of the community as a result of clarifying a few points and making a few tweaks, I think that is a good thing and welcome them.

  • I've decided not to post on the OS thread anymore! I'm fed up with the nit picking and sarky comments by a particular few members and TBH, I wouldnt let my real friends talk to me/treat me like this, so why should I put up with it on a forum:confused:

  • Queenie, its impossible to please all of the people all of the time. I reckon that so long as you feel you have done your best to explain your motives and clarify misunderstandings, then you've done all you can - and indeed all that can be expected of you.

If people decide to leave the thread and/or not post any more, as much as that is unfortunate and we'll miss their input, forums like these are subject to much ebb and flow - and in this case we've had something of a tidal bore which has swept a few away. There's nothing can be done about that, its all part of Forum life, which is balanced out by the onrush of new members.

So, in lots of ways, its all happening how it should. :)

I think you are spot on, as community evolves, and as many pass through many take up residence. There will always be O/T issues, and I guess BG's and moderators have to raise points and sign posts occasionally.

The gentle, helpful, friendly atmostphere of this forum is preserved by the nature of the posters. New posters on the DT are always welcomed, and the thread grows because people gain confidence and make 'friends'. For this reason the Arms doesn't appeal to me.

I'm still reading the DT and thanks for the encouragement to post again, I probably will.

it is obviously more difficult to sort out the daily thread on the internet rather than us all sitting round the table, i think people have to take that into consideration, i cant see that any one person has been targeted but that examples have been used to prove a point
i would be very sad to think that people would take it personally and leave us, everyones input is valuable, i love reading about penny-pinchers bargains, her family and holidays as i do everyone elses
lets all remain friends, old and new x

I have been watching this thread for a while now and it has actually made me cry!!! I feel like I'm 12 years old, at school again, with all of my friends arguing and falling out around me.

Ticklemouse - thankyou for posting your PM. It has given us an insight into what people actually said rather than speculation that some people were b*tching about other people behind their backs.

Nobody needs to stop posting on the daily thread, and I think it will only become even more "cliquey" if people feel they can't post. A balance needs to be struck between OS relevance and chat. Without either the thread will not survive, here or on any other board within the forum. As a young 'un (compared to some of you lot :p :rotfl: ) who has just aquired my first real home, I gain inspiration from the fully-fledged OSers, as well as finding people who have similar values and beliefs to my own. Like many who post on here, I have very few "real" friends, yet love the daily thread because it makes me feel like less of a loser.

Hopefully if some very basic ground rules can be set (anything too strict or specific will make the thread boring and robotic, and probably die a very quick death) the thread can continue to motivate, inspire and cheer up people who are in dire need of it.

As an example, my OH's nana died last week and I didn't have anybody to tell, or to describe the dilema I was in about my holiday. The people on the daily thread gave me some fantastic advice and, mor importantly, support - I felt wanted.

I hope that, for everybody's sake, things get sorted soon.

Exactly, can't it be a bit more grown up rather than cliqey?

  • I think its showing a tendency to already be heading in a less cliquey direction - although when girls are involved, its very difficult for things not to get cliquey!! :D
