I've never acknowledged someone who's posted before. Seems a bit silly and a waste of time. In future maybe you should all just put something like "Hello to everyone on this thread" and all make a pact between you that you know what it means. Also perhaps you could start a rule saying the thread shouldnt be started before a certain time.

  • The daily thread, what do I think? don't know really! I do know that I feel it has changed over the last 6 months since I joined :o and sometimes not for the better :o The threads have been so looooong, and I have felt bad if I don't mention names, and wondered  if I wasn't mentioned when others list names :o and other times I have felt a little left out. I started thinking a little while ago about whether I should carry on posting in Old Style or just lurk, so I decided that I would just post about my daily bits if I felt that I had anything to say, and forget about the long list of name mentioning and not worry if people haven't mentioned me, as after all, it is just a forum :o and also help on the question threads where I thought I could. I just don't think it's the same as it was :o I really love OS as it really has changed my life LOADS. I'm just rambling now  I hope this makes some kind of sense, and sorry about no paras :o

i agree with the other poster maybe we we should just do a general hello and then if there is someone you want to say something special too[a birthday, hospital ,illness and so on] you can just do a one liner or so and then just say about your day ? dont know if this is of any help i do agree sometimes there are an awful lot of people to say hi to individually
  • brilliant post math!

i love the daily thread and try to read each day and post when i can and have something to say.

the problems as i see it from this thread are

    1. posts starting too early.
i am guilty of starting the thread once or twice before i'd been to bed. the main reason being that i thought there was no point posting on the previous days thread as it would not get read. however if there was a decision to only allow the thread to start at 'x am' and any posts before that were added to the previous days thread by the board guides, then this would solve this problem - perhaps?

    2. replying individually to everyone on the thread.
i've done this once or twice but it is very time consuming to do and you do feel you have to include everyone whether you have anything relevant to say to them. i must admit it is nice to get a mention on the thread but it is nicer when someone is replying to something you've said or done, than just be mentioned in a long line of others (iuswim) because the poster feels they have to. i have to be honest and say that posts which mention everyone individually, i usually just skim over. perhaps we should only reply to someone individually in our post if we feel we have something valid to sayto them and just a general hello to everyone else?

    3. feeling excluded
great to hear there are so many fans of the daily thread especially the lurkers. the more who post the better the daily thread will be as they will all have something valuable to contribute at some point. i can understand how the listing of everyone's names can be offputting to posters / newbies as it can feel like a sort of club. my advice would be to take the plunge and just post about your day. i can also see how if you are not mentioned in the individual replies this would make you feel excluded, even though this would have been a mistake.

    4. length of thread.

as queenie mentioned there is a way to increase the number of posts you get per page, allow this doesn't reduce the posts, it does reduce the pages which for me has a psychological advantage - it appears the thread is still short lol! i have also taken some of the others advice and started to read the thread in 15 min chunks between doing stuff - like a reward!

    5. chattiness of the thread.

i love hearing about peoples days good or bad. thats what makes this thread great. if it was just today i will do x, y +z and have x, y+Z to eat and nothing else it would be very boring. i'm not the best old styler but i do like to try and this thread encourages me which is what i believe it's originall intention was. perhaps as moggins said if there are any recipies / good tips posted they should be copied to the tips section so not as to get lost.

hope i haven't offended anyone with my opinions and i wasn't one of the complainers but i felt i should have my say as the daily thread is essential to the old style board

  • Maybe those who like to chat (like me:o ) would be better using windows live messenger or yahoo or something? I have a link under my Avatar and if you want a natter, you're welcome to hit the link.

I agree no names no pack drill etc, unless for birthdays or something important.

And no starting before 4.30am for instance

I lurk a lot and it seems to me using the scroll bar to avoid what you don't wish to read is the easiest solution, even if you make new rules .....unless it's rigorously enforced (which will take lots of time) it will follow it's one path anyway as the site is getting bigger and bigger and more an more posters join in the thread

    Hi

I've been thinking about this all last night and this morning. First I would like to appologise to anybody that feels that I have excluded them, this wasnt intentional at all. I rarely get the oppotunity to mention individuals due to the fact that I get about 10 minutes undisturbed before dd jumps on me. I have also been guilty of starting the thread before I went to bed once this was due to excess alcohol and seemed like a good idea.

In essence I love the daily thread for the support that you get off it god knows I've needed it this week. I also think that its quite difficult to divorce OS ways from the general day to day business of living. I do agree however that it has become extremely large and to be honest on the days that I cant read or post till evening I tend to not bother. Maybe as I think somebody else suggest a sticky at the top of board with a suggested layout for a post to make it easy to read. I think that they do something simular when new poster posts on DFW.

  • to the nice person who has just pm'd me, and asked me what right i have to post an opinion on a thread i don't post on, please take note

    1) i won't be bullied into not having an opinion, as far as i'm aware this is an open forum, and everyone is entitled to an opinion
    2) if you really have a problem come on here and say it like the rest of us have been doing today
    3) i've deleted your message, and will do any further ones without reading them.

what i really can't understand is what you feel so threatened by, by others posting an opinion.

i'm just glad so many others on this board today have already shown me everyone isn't like that, or else you'd probably have stopped me coming on here.
