Daily thread, what do you think?

I've already posted earlier to say how much I value the Daily Thread as a reader, but wanted to say that the 'acknowledging each earlier poster' thing is the main reason I don't contribute. It's a lovely idea, but it always worried me that I might miss somebody out, instantly creating that feeling of exclusion that others have mentioned, and totally unintentionally. Also, it reminds me a bit of when somebody on Walton's Mountain says 'goodnight' to each family member in turn, then the next one will start, 'G'night Mary-Ellen-Bob!' I've often imagined that they're still saying goodnight to each other at breakfast time, and there are only so many hours in an OS dayEek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0

woas.
woas - that is exactly what I do! I've lost count of the times of taken ages to write a post and then I just delete it anyway!
I think it's a lack of confidence in myself...... but I intend to persevere too, I hope gingin and others feeling not so confident do too.

moggins wrote:They are all valid points. I will hereby (and probably get shot down in flames for this) state what was currently annoying me about the Daily Thread.
It was getting very silly re the times it was being started. We all know there are people here with problems sleeping like Snowy and I had no problems with Snowy starting it at 5am because she couldn't sleep but when people posted it who hadn't even been to bed yet then it just became an extension of yesterdays thread and not a new one. Please, please can you only start the Daily Thread when you have actually been to bed and gotten up to start the new day? Aussielass you may have a problem here, if so I apologise profusely
:T:TThank you, moggins!!! Bravo!!:T:T~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How about not deleting it, don't even read it back to yourself. We are not like some of the boards, we don't pick on spelling or punctuation, just post and to hell with it. I'm sure you will be surprised with the response you getOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

hex2 wrote:I lurked for a while reading the daily thread and finally pucked up courage to post a few weeks ago, was a bit worried about it but my reception could not have been friendlier. I am mostly stuck at home with two toddlers and it is easy to get sucked into nothingness and depression. The daily posts inspire me to get on and do things, to make something 'decent' for tea, pinch ideas from what others are having, see that I am not the only one suffering, that using the BM regularly is normal, etc, etc. I find the OS board the most interesting and useful on MSE and would probably not bother logging on daily otherwise.
I only started posting on the daily thread a couple of weeks ago too. I found it too tedious to make a list of names and reply to everything they all said, so I either just said "hello/morning all" or just picked out a couple of people who had made points I wanted to add to. I was a bit worried other people would wonder why I hadn't picked on their particular point but the day is too short, as people have said before!
I was also worried I would be "butting in" on a thread where everyone seemed to know everyone else but I just thought "what the heck" and plunged in! No one shouted at me or made a comment because they wondered who I was! In fact, people were friendly and I didn't take it personally if my name was missed out from other people's threads.
I would advise anyone who is worried to just post away, perhaps beginning with "im a newcomer on here......etc" so people know and perhaps don't ignore you (unwittingly of course). It really isn't an exclusive club, everyone should be welcome!0 -
Firstly thanks to Queenie for having the 'Daily Thread' idea which has given us all a place to make new friends:A and secondly for being brave enough to raise her head above the parapit and raise a very real issue which if not tackled will lead to a decline in the excellent OS board.
I have been away for most of the summer and when I came back was shocked at how big and cumbersome the daily thread had become and how many oldies have dissapeared and no longer post on the daily due to the amount of time it takes to read through it all.
Those of us old enough to remember the early days will know that things happened then that do not happen so much now.
1. Daily thread was for posting you OS daily doings. Chats between posters who share the same hobbies, live close by or have met in REAL LIFE were strictly for PM'ing and not posted openly. (although I enjoy being nosey with the best of them). LOL
2. Questions were not asked so much on the daily, you started a new thread to ask. I notice more and more requests for info on the daiay nowadays and for info that is easily found out by doing an MSE search. The OS board is not the only one to suffer this. If I have to read another thread on whether it is cheaper to leave you heating on 24/7 on utilites I will squeem and squeem until I'm sick. LOL
3. Any chat/threads not strictly OS (and they were strict) were whipped without ceremony to other boards. I've been guilty of moaning that my posts end up in discussion in the past but it does keep things tidy.
4. The current fashion (and I'm not innocent on this) for listing hi's, howdies, hugs, thanks for that's and good lucks to the previous 56 posters ahead of you individually and by name before you post your doings hadn't been invented.
In sort we are a bit like a coffee morning that has gone mad, cake has been trod into the tufted wilton, someone has snook Mr kipling's in and are attempting to pass them off as their own and we need to be brought to order LOL
We are very fortunate that Martin allows a chatty thread on OS. It arose because of chats clogging up genuine OS topic threads and I remember that we were allowed it on license that we behaved outselves and that it didn't cause and trouble for Martin or the board guides. Who lets be honest don't have to do the work they do on our behalf.
Please nobody go off in a huff lets all take a breath and come up with an inclusive, creative and fun solution.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -
 So many posts:eek:
Can I just say that I won't stop posting even if it is a load of dribble (it makes me feel better sometimes to get things off my chest) I know I am not the best person in the world at typing or expressing myself on here but I think carry on as normal and if the mods want to delete/move posts then so be it. I am sure this has dispupted a few people all for what exactly3 people who have complained
perhaps the 3 people should express their feelings to everyone on the daily thread about this
Talk about reducing bandwidths look at the size of this thread now:rolleyes:0 -
Thank you MATH
Actually, I've been having a thunk after reading tomandbarbaragood's post regarding the snippets directed at previous posters and I have a dilema with that aspect.
On the one hand, yes, it has become too much and I take it on board that it's putting others off.
So, I thought, ok, just refer to anyone if you have a specific thing to say ie: WOAS has just mentioned her dinner and I had a suggestion so I've referred to her. (Daily Doings)
Ah, but we're also reading in this thread that if someone *doesn't* get a mention, they feel excluded and it's cliquey.Damned if you do and damned if you don't?
Perhaps another answer to the length of the thread would be to only post once on that day; if you want to update, add a specific remark to someone else you could use the edit function in your own post to do it? The only downside of that is that the thread itself would not show as updated.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At the end of the day does it all really matter in the grand scheme of things? It's a message board, not the be all and end all of life.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040
