Before I became a veggie, I used to LOVE bovril. Turning vegetarian has made me a marmite-eater, at first grudingly, but I have grown to love the stuff.

Some time last year, I read a news piece that said bovril was being made as veggie because of various animal health worries (foot & mouth, BSE etc). So I bought some (after checking the ingredients) and it was like rediscovering a lost love!

Sadly, with the lifting of export restrictions on british beef last year, the manufacturers have gone back to the original recipe, though depending on stock levels the veggie versions can still be found in some places (I have about 12 bottles stocked up!). I happened to see some of the veggie version in big 2kg tubs at costco in December, but haven't seen any veggie bovril since. I

So if you are veggie, always check to see if it has "suitable for vegetarians" on the back!!

The new pots of the old recipe with beef extract in them now say BEEF in big letters on the front. I didnt even realise they had changed it before my friend told me!

I am a HUGE Bovril fan. Used to love marmite, but for some unknown reason, my taste changed and now i cant stand it. Bovril all the way for me!

  • Marmite is by far the best.
Bovril is the stuff dodgy builders use on flat roofs.
    Parsnips are concentrated BO.

Marmite and boiled carrot sandwiches are fab.

Bovril been vegetarian for 3 years!! It's a national disgrace, why weren't we told, questions should have been asked in parliament. It's all Blair's fault.

Marmite is lovely on hot buttered toast, and I do mean buttered not that nasty hydrolised vegetable stuff.

All of which just proves that the world is divided into those who love Marmite and the strange folk who hate it! Personally, not so keen on Bovril which I just think of as the drink my gran used to make for me in the winter! But Marmite, proper Marmite - can't do without it!
