Hi northern star,
There's an earlier thread that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

Hi bovril,
Is now agin made with beef thay took it out because of somthing that happen. but its back in agin now i read about in the paper a few months ago.
I love Bovril in theses cold months!!! i drink it at home and at work. i use the cubes as thay are cheeper than the jars and i think that thay taste the same.
I mate of mine drinks the oxo cubes and asys thay are better than bovril.:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j0 -
I haven't ever tried bovril, but as we always used oxo cubes at home have tried that and I liked it! Why not give it a try (though personally I avoid stock cubes/oxo cubes these days because they have so much salt in them).A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0

However it's quite pricey AND lots of places no longer stock it - our local Tesco have recently dropped it. Has anyone else tried an alternative? I'm wondering if any of the Aldi/Lidl type shops have a similar (cheaper) product? I currently pay £1.60 for a small jar.
LIDL certainly sell a MARMITE equivalent (ie yeast extract) - I use it.0 -
It seems my wikipedia source was wrong! This article mentions that Bovril was to switch back to beef stock (43%) sometime after the article was written in September 2006.
It also has yeast extract (23%) according to ocado.

Edit I was wrong to say the wikipedia was wrong, It does mention a switch back to beef.

I've never known what Bovril is...
Are you guys basicly drinking stock...?Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0 -
I think the change in Bovril was because of the BSE scare a few years ago. I personally prefer it on toast as well and haven't tried it as a drink yet.0
