Sky, Virgin & BT TV Haggle down prices and get serious discounts Article Discussion

Hi, thanks to everyone for their posts as it helped me secure a 60% discount.
This is what I did to get it.
My package was broadband, phone, family, movies, sports and hd.
I'd already moved phone and broadband to ee as there was no way sky would be able to better it with the cashback on offer.
I've had various discounts for the last 5 years. My last 50% discount was due to end a couple of weeks before I called sky to ask for a new deal.
They offered me circa 20% off, which wasn't enough so I gave my notice.
I then had a call about a week later and was offered 35% off, which I again declined.
I also logged onto mysky shortly afterwards and the 35% off was on there as well. Whether it went on the day I handed in my notice I don't know.
I heard nothing further and sky was cut off at midnight. Six hours later I had the 50% off offer in mysky.
I'd read somewhere on here that 60% off offers were sometimes given after a week so I'd planned to do without for a week for the extra £90ish saving.
After 6 days I used online chat as I really need a new box and was hoping that I might be able to get a subsidised one rather than the extra 10% off. They wouldn't budge on that so I left it.
I used online chat again a week later as my other half could take no more. They wouldn't talk about boxes only the tv package. The price they gave me was not 50% off though due to hd i think. I asked for a price without hd and was offered a special one off 60% off at £31.65 a month for 12 months including hd. I don't know whether the 60% discount is on hd too but I was happy with the price so immediately accepted.
I'd just urge people to phone up and give their notice. I think people are apprhensive about this but there is nothing to lose. If you get cut off you can reconnect in less than 10 minutes this is surely worth the likely offer of 50% off 6 hours later?
Happy cancelling!0 -
Just thought I'd share my experience. Our package was going up to £71 on 1 sept. (Family package, with sports, movies and hd). Called a month ago to try and get 50% off! but only offered £50 and no movies so I cancelled. Had the 35% off offer on my sky for the past weeks! but held out. Sky switched off yesterday, logged in to my sky and the 50% off was there. Got on online chat, and got a price but acted surprised that hd wasn't discounted and asked for a credit. Got offered £30 off. Saved us £400 for the year, and sky was back on by the time we sat down this evening, with everything still in our planner. Thanks everyone. :beer:0

Just an update on my experience. Having been given 50% off the TV package for 12 months , I went back to try and negotiate an offer on my line rental.
I made the mistake of just talking to the first line , forgetting to ask to be put thru to winback team. Anyway after a while they offered me half price line rental for just 3 months. I declined this as plan to call them and I thought if I have an offer in place on my line rental they will be less inclined to better it.
What really stood out for me , and Ive had it before, is how the agents will basically lie. (or they are ill informed). When I initially mentioned a credit or discount on line rental, he said that they never give credits or 12 month offers on line rental. Well unless a number of people on here are lieing, then basically he was.0 -
First experience haggling down the price.....
Been with SKY for over 5 years and put in my 30 days cancellation last week (with a lot of fight from the wife).
We currently pay £77 for the full TV package including sports, movies and HD (Broadband with virgin).
Logged into mysky account the morning after and low and behold there was a 35% discount come back offer waiting there. After reading a lot of posts on the forum I thought I would hold off for something better.
Around 5 days passed and received a phone call from Sky retentions asking why we was leaving. Mentioned that we had the 35% offer in our account and was wondering if they could do anything better as was planning on paying a maximum of £35 p/m. She placed me on hold to speak to her manager and came back with an offer of £33 p/m on a 12 month contact :T Happy days I thought and snapped up the offer! :rotfl: I was on the phone for around 45 minutes so it shows that patience is needed to get the top deals.
I hope everyone has the same luck as me! My advice, if you stick to your guns and cancel then more than not you will get your monthly payments down.0 -
I've been with Sky for over 4 years and pay £58.65 a month for a basic package in my sitting room only. This consists of HD, unlimited BB and line rental. No movies or sport etc, with only me to view. It's far too expensive for one viewer on a modest pension, so I'm considering a change.
My problem is an almost full Sky+ box of unwatched recordings that I'm reluctant to lose. If I cancel my complete package now, will the recordings be retained and accessible? If not, will they be retained if I keep Sky's line rental and BB?
Any guidance most appreciated. Sincerely T.W.O0 -
Just cancelled my Sky TV package. Cost is £81.40 per month. Online chat offered a reduction to £70.
Immediately on the MySky logon page I got offered 35% off if I stay.
Looking forward to cancellation day and 50% off0 -

You will more than not get a phone call way before your cancellation day. If not, give them a call and tell them what you need. But dont forget.... be polite!0 -

If you cancel tv, then you will lose access to recordings on your box. However, should you then take up an offer, they will still be available when you are switched back on.0 -

I have remained polite for 4.5 hours yesterday on live chat and 1.5 hours today on it. The only bonus is that it doesn't cost me call charges on some stupid number0 -

The best deals are offered to those who cancel all services and this is your best way forward. It will mean having to cancel your 'phone and broadband as well as TV, but Sky will doubtless offer you a cheaper deal to stay if you do. If you do cancel completely and later return, then the recordings on your Sky+ archive will again become viewable.
Some things to consider;
If you are on a pension and so of limited means perhaps it might be worth thinking about cancelling subscription television altogether? A full Sky+ hard drive is of little use if it has filled up with unwatched programmes! It means you don't really need Sky+.
Do you actually watch the subscription channels more than those which are available for free? There are many many free channels available to ex-Sky subscribers via the Sky equipment which remains yours.
You can easily sign up to another provider of 'phone and BB or try to get a better deal with Sky.0
