The problem you will have is that you didn't cancel, where-as Space Captain did. So he got a call back for this, you definitely won't if you didn't actually cancel.
Yes, services need to be cancelled in order for the best deals to be offered. No point threatening to cancel and then not actually going through with it. If "VivaPayne" remains a Sky customer with 50% discounts already applied to her account, then the chances of further discounts are nil.

They won't call you, they are much more likely to try and tempt you back with postal flyers. They certainly won't be contacting you in the first week after cancellation.

If you ring them, they'll be happy to re-activate your subscription at the same cost you were paying!

Not true. I gave my 31 days notice to cancel end of February and 6 days later I had the 'what can we do to keep you?' call from winback team. My service is obviously still on.

Sky generally don't chase ex-customers too quickly and it's rather a waiting game for those trying to get a discount rather than actually simply wanting to cancel. The best deals come to those who continue with the cancellation process and actually wait until services go off. You may well have jumped at their first offer, but it won't have been the best available, I'm afraid.
If you want only to discuss personal experience, I received a "win-back" postal flyer approximately once a month when I cancelled a few years back.

EDIT: The post you attempted to debunk was in reply to someone whose services have already been removed. I wasn't saying no offers could come during the notice period.

Also, to add, Sky are adapting tactics to keep customers. Very friendly and caring - particularly about what you like to watch lol. i felt sorry for my advisor - she had no knowledge that i had been offered 50% off during my cancellation call. She spent 30 mins asking me lots of lovely questions before offering me 30% off.....And then had no 'option' to offer me more off. She more or less explained it depends on the offers available, when and who you speak to, on which day.......

But the discounts on the rest ie telephone and broadband cost are the best you can get.

I getcha! Well It's been a few days now, so I may call up and actually cancel after 'speaking to the other half'.

    Thanks for the tip.

If it's helpful to anyone trying to get a good deal on their Sky package...
I also gave notice to cancel Sky (bit hampered as can't get the other providers). During my notice period, they called and offered 35% off for a year.
I decided to hold out and let Sky stop. Having used my dvd recorder for a month, it's not been too bad. Sky called me today (almost a month after my cancellation date) and said they had a 25th anniversary offer. They offered me 75% off for a year with no minimum contract (but couldn't apply this discount if I wanted BT Sport). So I'm paying £14 a month for Sky Sports & Movies which I'm pleased with.

Be careful if you have discounts already applied to your account, because all you are likely to achieve if you cancel completely is to lose these discounts.

They've already said that the 50% discount we got last year would end on march 19th anyway so I don't really see that I've got anything to lose.

This following thread makes good reading. Some stuff out of date, some slightly contradictory. But, people are still giving feedback, today, at the end of the thread. It really does go to show, some people get what they want, even during contract, even through calling-up Sky themselves. There is no absolute pattern as to how Sky give their discounts.

Works sometimes with BB and Line Rental too:
