You are seeking advise on how to commit fraud. Although the account is in one person's name Sky regard it as being with the house hold - within the Ts ^ Cs ( or a question they ask new subscribers) is whether there is an existing or has been a recent account at the address.

Legally you have to be cancelled 12 months before you are considered a new customer.

Really? I'm sure I saw it as a suggestion on here when sky were doing their last 50% off offer..................

Forgive my laziness for not looking around the forum.

I was overpaying for BT line rental and o2/Sky Broadband.

I am now paying Broadband/Line rental with Sky for £7.50 pm (free line rental).

Unlimited Broadband with 12 month contract

I am assuming that's a good deal - is it?
  • Cancelled Virgin last month and am due to have my services disconnected on 17th Feb. Have not had one call from them trying to persuade me to stay. Have just called them to confirm my disconnection date and they have offered me BT sports free for 6 months and my monthly charge to change from £54 to £40.99 on a 12 month contract. Am I able get any better than that?
  • So I cancelled Sky today. I had a bog standard sky+ box and had entertainment extra with full sports package, sky multi room and was paying £60.25 a month. Have been with sky for 9 years. The most discount I've ever had was 20% off for 6 months.

When I called to cancel there was minimal effort to retain me with just the offer of a free new HD box but no change of package. He did not even try to persuade me to downgrade by perhaps taking off the sport.

How do I play this if I get a call and what's the best responses to the "why have you left us email questionnaire?

BT Sports is free for XL TV,if you want it get them to do yo a deal on XL TV - but a £14 discount is not to be sniffed at in any case...

    Suggestion from whom?
No official MSE article would suggest fraudulent behaviour.

As yet I've found nothing to suggest its in any way fraudulent, but feel free to share if you have something.

I don't know what I read - I followed links from the weekly email.

If you sign on as a new customer, at your current address, in the name of your partner, who already shares your Sky TV, then your application is fraudulent.
Sky may (or may not) find this out, but that does not make your actions honest or moral.
  • How do I play this if I get a call and what's the best responses to the "why have you left us email questionnaire?

TBH I don't personally think the "why you left us" email gets any action but I still fill it in with "far too expensive, moving to Virgin, offers for new customers but nothing for loyal customers" etc.

When they call I tell them that my last 50% dicsount has ended and I can't afford to pay more. That always gets a new 50% discount out of them.

Since it sounds like you haven't had a discount previously then I would stick with the "too expensive / don't get enough use out of it / fed up of new customers getting all of the offers" lines.

Only think you need to be ready for is the "lets review your package" line followed by "do you watch much sport / movies....." followed by "you could reduce your price by removing X, Y, Z"

I'm really impressed that the tide seems to be turning on this thread and people are finally waking up to the fact that you need to put your cancellation notice in and be prepared to see it through to get the best offers. Well done fellow MSE'ers. :T
A big believer in karma, you get what you give :A

If you find my posts useful, "pay it forward" and help someone else out, that's how places like MSE can be so successful.

But you would save money and could also use Quidco / Topcashback to save even more money.
Sky would still have a customer so would be happy and I am yet to hear of anyone being prosecuted for fraud for taking out a sky subscription in their own name .... is that because it isn't fraud?

At most it would be a breach of Skys T&C but as they would still be getting money from you I doubt they would take any action.
If any one has any proof that they do then please share, otherwise I say go for it if you are happy to pay the price that new customers pay.

You would probably be better to cancel, wait a few weeks then call back just before you are cut off and say you received an offer of 50% in the post and see what they can do.

The best deals come after you actually disconnect. I called after being without sky for a few months and said I received an offer of 75% off in the post (little white lie) but guess what .... they gave me 75% off!
