Thanks Cycrow, I telephoned them and yes we are out of the contract. Apparently the only deal they have now for us is a 10% discount on the monthly subscriptions and they're going to send us free a new sky box, which will let us record. Taken a 12 month contract, so I will be contacting them again when that ends. Thanks again to all who replied. These forums are really helpful.0

...be aware that they will send you a Sky+ box which will allow you to record one channel as you watch-In order to record two channels you need a second cable from the dish which they won't supply!!:)0 -
And will probably be a second hand refurb unit.
Small price for them to pay to keep you locked in for another year paying nearly full price,0 -
10% isn't very good0

I've had another survey today, this time asking me questions about my decision to leave Sky. I have answered truthfully. Hopefully this will lead to an offer of a discount.0

I read that Sky are quite good for getting good deals with - when you call up to cancel & they then offer you XYZ at a reduced price.
My mum is on their Entertainment Extra package which i think is/was £26pm. There's also the cost of 1x multiroom which i believe to be £10 (or did they up it to £12? I can't remember) & then there's the phone which she gets through Sky also.
The house has been a Sky customer for about 15 years now, although in 2011 the original account was shut down when my dad died & a new one was created (all done over phone) in my mums name as we were told this would be cheaper.
Anyway, to chance getting a better deal out of them, she'll need to call & tell them she wants to cancel. I don't know the reason - perhaps she wants to try out BT (not true - she's happy with Sky).
Question is, what if they then say - that's fine, you'll be disconnected at the end of the month, goodbye? It'll have backfired terribly.
Just some feedback then from those who've done this. Or does this only really work if you pay for the top whack packages?0 -
Got the phone call from sky yesterday. We already had a 12 month discount. I said it was to expensive, they said they could reduce the package, I am only on 2 packs, I said no just cancel and that was that, wasn't much effort made at getting me to stay, going off next week.0

Yes, you have to be prepared to leave.
I've now on my third consecutive discount offer with them. I gave them cancellation notice for the first and third deal offered, and they came back with offers before the cancellation period ended. The second deal was through an offer via Digital Spy forums, for 50% off Movies and Sport by quoting a reference from a Sky staff member.
There is no problem with them terminating your service. If they don't offer any deals, all you have to do is ring them up and reconnect. All you will have lost at most is a day or two of viewing the paid for channels. You'd have been left with the equivalent of Freesat."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
Yes, because Sky tier 1 CS don't have the firepower. You need to go through to retentions to get the decent offers, because that's all they are there for.
If they do call your bluff, you are still on 30 days notice, so plenty of time to relent. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I may be the exception but I called saying I was thinking of cancelling broadband as EE had it for 2.50. I was offered free 12 months as it was an offer on my account.
I then asked if there was an offer on for my tv as I was on mat leave and needed to cut costs. We get entertainment extra at £24.50 and she knocked 6.50 off a month for 12 months.
Guess I could have pushed for more but I'd just got the broadband free so figured I couldn't threaten to cancel as that was dependent.
Saved £16.50 a month tho (turned out I'd been paying 2.50 a month too much for 5 years. Calling Monday to chase that credit!)The will to save every money saving penny we can0
