Sky, Virgin & BT TV Haggle down prices and get serious discounts Article Discussion

Okay, I'm going to give Sky a ring in a bit to see if I can get a better deal as I'm now out of contract for both the TV and BB. My questions...should I haggle for each individually or all together (...the TV and the BB)? The other question is this...if I do threaten to cancel and they say go ahead, if I don't hear from them within 30 days and I chicken out and phone them to re-activate me, have I then entered a new 12 month contract??
If you threaten to cancel then that is not giving your 31 days notice. However, if you do give your 31 days notice, you can still call up the day before and have the cancellation lifted from your account and continue on as before on the same terms.
This is why you have nothing to lose by giving your notice.0 -
'Nice' companies who give discounts for no reason thus reducing their revenue stream probably wont last for very long.
Companies who offer a discount when a customer has given their notice because:
a) Something is better than nothing.
b) It costs more to recruit a new customer than it does to maintain an existing one.
Might last a bit longer.
In short, as is the generic answer to every time people ask the question in this thread, if you want a 'deal' then you call up and give your notice as this shows you are serious about leaving.
If you are 'fishing' and don't really want to leave then don't be surprised if you don't get offered anything.
I was joking with 'nice' comment! Thanks for advice, Ill give them a ring in a bit!0 -

Well over a week from phoning to cancel full package and all I have had was a letter confirming cancellation.0

Hello again a quick update, it might help somebody hopefully. I phoned sky back last night and spoke to a different operator and was told basically the same thing, that another offer cannot be applied while 1 is still active on an account. Though the operator did tell me that there would be an offer on about 2 weeks before my contract runs out. Will let you know if i have any luck0

After giving my notice and receiving the cancellation conformation letter, I had one call where they put the phone down on me. They must dial several people at the same time and only deal with the first one that answers. I briefly heard the conversation with another person. So I made sure I answered my phone quickly after that and got another call a few days later. They offered 50% off for 12 months and I accepted. I was thinking of turning that down as well but unfortunately there's no other way to see all the sport I like live and I chickened out. Hopefully I can get over my sport addiction in the next 12 months and save even more.0

At the end of my Sky package, I had the basic TV package with BB and Sky Talk, plus a Multi-room box and at some point, I think I had added movies at half price and they had just gone to full price. All in all my bill was nearing £70 per month.
I rang and told the lady I wanted to cancel and I did because other than the broadband, the rest isn't really used. I was not after a deal at this point, but they put me through to cancellations and the lady tried to offer me one. At first she told me I could pay my line rental up front saving me £4.55 per month and remove my movies. She also offered me a 10% discount on the TV package, which worked out at £2.15 per month saving. I nearly fell for this until I realised that I was being talked into another 12 mth contract and in reality the saving was only the 10% discount at £2.15 a month. Thus saving me £25.80 over the year.
I can get rid of the movies and pay the rental upfront anyway, so no savings there. I told her I still wanted to cancel and she went off the phone (probably had a coffee) and told me she had 'spoke to someone', and I could have line rental free for the year and my bill would be £39.25 each month.
So overall I got free line rental at £14.50 per month a saving of £174.00 to come into effect immediately, so no need to give a months notice on movies and I get them till the 26th of next month.

Hello Sky Bargain Experts
A bit of advice.
I'm currently with Sky, not in contract and have the full HD package with everything excluding sports. I also have my phone line, Sky Talk and broadband through Sky. I'm just about to move home, unfortunately not to a cable area, although fibre optic is apparently available there.
There is a dish already up at the new address but I should imagine Sky will look to charge me a moving fee as well as for a new phone line to be installed and put me on a new 12 month contract.
I will be keeping Sky TV, not particular over who my phone line or broadband ends up with, but wondering what's likely to get me the best (cheapest) deal for moving home.
Should I just phone up and say I'm going to cancel Sky TV and go with something like You View / Netflix /Love Film / Free Sat for TV and BT or TalkTalk for the phone and broadband side of things and see what happens?
I should imagine getting a deal if you want to simply cancel is easy enough but getting one when moving home? What do you reckon?
Another option I suppose could be the account at the moment is in the wife's name, I could setup a new customer in my name at the new address?
I've not had any deals with Sky and pay them about £80 a month at the moment, have done for years.
Any advice welcome!0 -
When you move home your sky account moves with you. All services at your previous address stop and then start again at your new one.
There is no charge for an engineer to turn up and check the alignment.
If there is a phone line already at the new property then sky take that over, issue you with a new number and off you go. Again for no charge.0 -

I actually can't see any disadvantages to it.
However, when you cancel Sky at your old address it won't be harmful to see what deals Sky offer you to stay...0
