I've been with Sky for almost 10 years, still on the standard box, and now on the basic package. I'd asked a while ago about Sky+, but was told that I either had to pay for the box upgrade, or take out a HD package and get a free box (don't have HD TV, so either way it was an extra £100).

I called again yesterday as I saw new customers could get Sky+ box and installation free, but the very nice and polite Scottish bloke said unfortunately I'd already had my free box when I originally joined.

I read this thread, then made my decision. As I work shifts, I miss the TV I want to watch, so I'd rather have record facility than extra channels. So, I decided to cancel my TV, use the box for FreeSat, save the money and buy a HD recorder.

I called Sky today on the 0808 number, got an overseas call centre. I ended the call straight away and called back on the 0844, and got through to the cancellations team in Scotland.

When asked why I wanted to cancel, I just said, "I want to be able to record TV, can't afford the £100 upgrade, so going to cancel and save up the money as you cannot offer me an upgrade at an amount I can afford". The lady replied, "This is cancellations darling, we can do much more than the people you spoke to".

And she did. Free Sky+ HD box and installation with no extra costs to my monthly subs. I mentioned I don't need HD, but it seems this is the norm now.

I was polite, I *had* made up my mind to cancel anyway, so I wasn't just bluffing to see what I could get. I'm very pleased with the outcome, and very pleased with how the 3 staff I've spoken to in the scottish call centre over the last couple of months have treated me - always polite, helpful, to the point, and no aggressive selling.

Phoned up VM retentions. I'm on Phone M, Broadband M, and TV XL, paying 38.50, which will go up to £42 after the April increases. She wouldn't budge on the monthly price, but eventually negotiated to get the HD+ box with a connection fee of £30. I know some people have got this for free, so I obviously didn't haggle quite hard enough, but it is less than the £49 she'd insisted on at the beginning!

    Am I reading that right?

You phoned to haggle the cost down and ended up paying £30 connection on a new box (which, presumably, will also cost you more each month)?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I wanted the HD+ box anyway, and £30 is haggled down from £49, and no, it won't cost me any more a month, because I'm on XL for the TV. So no, you're not reading it right.

Just phoned Sky on 0844 number. Stated trying to reduce monthly bills and Sky is too much money. Without any more effort guy offered me 6 months half price. We have Sky+ £52 per month, now £26 per month. Happy with that

I had the 12 months free HD which ends this month so though I'd phone and see if I can get a better deal and cancel the HD,
at the moment we have full package with movies and sports, multiroom and also the HD pack.
costs will be £72.50, said I was paying too much and what can I do, best offer was 20% off the tv package price so to keep as above £62.10 or take off movies and would be £56.30, said I'd think about it, was hoping for better deal than that, any idea if it's worth phoning again and hopefully speaking to someone else, she did mention she would put these details on my account so if i did call back I will be offered the same deals!!!
Just wish we had other options in our area, no virgin so kinda stuck with sky.
