Well my point is who actually needs XL Broadband? 10meg (L) is plenty & I hammer it's use.

Sky Sports - can be bothered to pay for that, as I wouldn't watch anything other than the football & even then I wouldn't watch every match. Internet broadcasts are out there my friend, for free.

I am happy with L broadband, XL Phone, XL TV & 2 V+HD boxes for £49 a month.

    Does this help?

Sorry for the late response to this.
Firstly, compared with what I pay, your deal looks OK, but as for Fleet Fanatic, we both appear to be losing out.
I spoke to VM and quoted his price and was told this was probably a short term special discount and that my package -- 24/7 phone; XL-TV; B'band L; additional STB; call display/callwaiting; less atop-wack loyalty discount of £22.50 and freeby talk international/talk mobile, was unrepeatable.

Was the VM woman correct about your temp. discount, FleetFanatic?
  • We cancelled our virgin media last monday and we have had no contact from anyone yet - starting to get a bit worried now waiting for a phone call to try and get a better offer than what we are currently on (costs about £80 a month for L Broadband, XL TV, Talk anytime and sky movies and sport). OH rang them last week to ask when our discontection date would be and asked them to put it in writing and we have still heard nothing. I am worried that will get to the end of the 30 days and have to go grovelling back.

what number was it that you used? Am going to try this

    Thanks

    If you do a search on this thread, you will find it's 0844 2 41 41 41.

Good luck. It's a lot easier than you think to get a discount. They still want your custom, albeit at a lower amount.

    My package is;

    Sky TV inc sports £40.75
    ESPN £9.00
    Broadband £10
    telephone Line Rental £11.25

So overall I'm spending £71 with sky & wanted to move to HD which would increase charges to approx £81.

Before calling sky on 08442414141 I checked my options with Virgin and top up tv. I came up with the cost of about £60 PM for switching to top up tv inc sports and ESPN and taking my broadband/phone to Primus.

Caled sky and said i wished to cancel as 1) my box playing up and b) had been checking prces and could get cheaper. Advisor tried to sell sky features said i woudnt get sky atlantic etc etc. Basically i agreed that sky fab but the premium for fab to high so had to go elsewhere.

He did push me to see excatly what I could do with Virgin & top up so if your phoning up saying yu moving to another provider make sure you have details to hand as I think this shows your intent.

    Eventually he offered the following

SKY HD box £15 delivery self install
    TV as existing package £20.50
    HD Subs £10.25
    Broadband £7.50
    Phone 11.25
    ESPN £9
Sky anytime + video on demand box

So aprox £59 for first 6 months and thereafter £79 - at which time I will call again

  • Called Sky last night to cancel my subscription, I have full sky hd package. Just explained i couldn't justify the cost any longer and would be using Freeview for the future. Was immediately offered 6 months half price (£36.25) which i accepted...didn't think it would be that easy :j
  • Rang Sky this evening to ask about a reduction (paying £60.25 per month for TV at the moment).
They immediately offered my half price for 6 months.
    Well chuffed - £180 saving.
Will call back when the 6 months is over to see what they offer next time.
    :j

This comes on the same day that Quidco are paying my £126 (£80 for changing energy suppliers and £46 for home insurance).
    Bonus!!!

Called on my Mums behalf (she is 76) to try and get a free HD box as she fills her Sky Plus with all the series she records.

Called and said she wanted to cancel as the box doesnt hold enough and she was going to save her subscription and get a freeview box. Nice bloke in Scotland, but most he could offer was a free box and installation but £10.50 p/m HD subscription. However, he said if my Mum was to call herself and say she was cancelling they (cough cough) could offer something better.

Got Mum to call and gave her a script. Told her to say she didnt want to have to pay for HD as her eyesight wasnt good enough to know the difference anyway so she would just like to cancel. They offered half price HD subscription this time.

Got her to call again and reiterate that she didnt need HD so didnt want to pay anything for it, just needed a bigger memory for recording so she would like to go ahead and cancel. They said they didnt want to lose her and offered the box and install free with no HD subscription.

Very happy. This is a bit like a game isnt it? Just be persistent and clear and it seems you will get what you want.

Yes it is a bit of a game, I done the same for My mum (84). Said she could not afford it. they said she can have 50% off for 6 months (£75) or a new HD box, as she did not have sky+ she said will have the box. Note no HD channel other than the free ones and also a new 12 months contract.

I've been with Sky for almost 10 years, still on the standard box, and now on the basic package. I'd asked a while ago about Sky+, but was told that I either had to pay for the box upgrade, or take out a HD package and get a free box (don't have HD TV, so either way it was an extra £100).

I called again yesterday as I saw new customers could get Sky+ box and installation free, but the very nice and polite Scottish bloke said unfortunately I'd already had my free box when I originally joined.

I read this thread, then made my decision. As I work shifts, I miss the TV I want to watch, so I'd rather have record facility than extra channels. So, I decided to cancel my TV, use the box for FreeSat, save the money and buy a HD recorder.

I called Sky today on the 0808 number, got an overseas call centre. I ended the call straight away and called back on the 0844, and got through to the cancellations team in Scotland.

When asked why I wanted to cancel, I just said, "I want to be able to record TV, can't afford the £100 upgrade, so going to cancel and save up the money as you cannot offer me an upgrade at an amount I can afford". The lady replied, "This is cancellations darling, we can do much more than the people you spoke to".

And she did. Free Sky+ HD box and installation with no extra costs to my monthly subs. I mentioned I don't need HD, but it seems this is the norm now.

I was polite, I *had* made up my mind to cancel anyway, so I wasn't just bluffing to see what I could get. I'm very pleased with the outcome, and very pleased with how the 3 staff I've spoken to in the scottish call centre over the last couple of months have treated me - always polite, helpful, to the point, and no aggressive selling.

But why stay with a company who wouldn't offer that in the first place?

At VM, I called them recently to see how to reduce my costs and immediatley they came up with a package that upgraded what I had and still saved my ten per cent. I didn't even have to threaten to leave.
