Why not cancel and use the £46 a month to pay off the debts that have made you need a DMP in the first place?! Sky is a luxury not a neccessity

because its going to take about 10 years to pay back what I owe, It is ok to have some enjoyment ??? or would you orefer I went to debtors prision!..

I was just trying to highlight that sometimes you need to call back, not be critisied by people who have no idea about my situation or circumstance.

  • Phoned Sky (on freephone number 0808 101 4437 from the saynoto0870 website) to say no satellite signal being received on Sky+ box. Went through technical stuff with customer services and ended up being told I needed to pay £65 for an engineer to visit. Later I rang back to cancel as can't afford this. I was put through to cancellations and explained the situation. They then offered to repair or replace box for free with no need to sign a new contract and said an engineer would visit in a couple of days.

Just thought I'd post my success (?) today.

I rang up to cancel (I have sky b/band, talk and tv with +HD) as the bill at around £60 per month is just ridiculous. I don't have any premium channels and don't want them either. Went straight through to cancellations and got 6 months half price on the tv package (£12.25) but still full price on HD (£10.25). So at least it's a reduction and no contract.

I was confused about one thing the guy said and wondered if anyone could help. When I said I wanted to cancel it all he said I'd lose my 'phone number. We've had the same number since 1979 (with addition of digits for expansion). Was he correct? If I did decide to switch to BT or similar in the future, would I lose my number?

Grateful for any advice and thanks in advance,
    Spigs

A pretty good scare tactic, wasn't it?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Ah, a cynicism to match mine! Yes, Heinz, it was a very good scare tactic.

I'm currently paying around £40 a month to virgin media. But i'm on a awful 18 month contract. I wouldn't grudge their prices so much if their service was good. But i have had trouble with the service frequently since being installed at the end of december.
Is there anyway I can avoid paying such costly leaving charges considering their poor service? Or am i, as i fear, truely stuck!
Has anyone had an luck with VM?
    Thanks :)

If you pay your line rental to Sky (as well as Sky Talk) then AFAIK, cancelling Sky and reconnecting with BT would potentially mean you would have a new phone number - there is no guarantee that you would keep the same number.

If you don't pay line rental to Sky - then cancelling Sky would have no affect.

Just spoken to Sky. After being with them for two years and have the full package (tv, all channels, broadband, calls) I explained I have recently had to take a job cut at work (arf!). Said I can't afford to keep my Sky tv package and that I can download most of it, anyway. They offered me six months free TV and I already have HD free until July.

well im moving from sky to vm atm just have to pay for phone for min till virgin contact them to pick up the number and the same would apply for any provider you goto your new provider will pick up the number including bt. but if you cancel that phone line you will lose that number as you are ceasing services and the number with that line dies.
