Just had a call from VM retention's 4 day's after I cancelled. Maybe not as good a deal as some have got but I'm happy......

I was getting - In 1 room - V+ HD box, XL tv with Sky Sports, M phone and 20mb Broadband for £74pm.

I've just accepted - 3 boxes - Tivo box, V+ HD box and a basic box, XL tv with Sports, M phone and 30mb Broadband for £85pm but £20 off for first 6 months, so average over 12 months is the same as I'm paying now :T :j

This isn't much to shout about but it's proof that Sky are negotiating if you approach them in the right manner..........my 12 month contract was up today so I called their Retention Team this afternoon and asked if they had any offers for me before I started to 'shop around'.

I was asked questions that were clearly leading towards offering me more channels for a limited time (6 months of Sky Movies etc) but I rejected these.

Next up, I was offered one of the Sky Anytime+ WIFI boxes that connects your Sky Box to your router. As I already had a 'home-made' one of these, I rejected that as well.

Then I was asked what I wanted in terms of offers and as I only really wanted money off my monthly bill I asked if I could have one of the new customer offers like free broadband for 6 months. I was told I wasn't allowed but instead was offered line rental reduced for 9 months from £14.50 down to £2.50, so although not a massive giveaway I'm happy because I'm getting money off my monthly bill. :-)

I've been with Virgin for 17 months and called up to "call their bluff" into a cancellation as i wanted a discount.

They've put my package up £8 a month since I joined (including the most recent price hike)

I am on the XL TV, two TiVo boxes, M phone, and 60MB broadband. With the new price hike I'll be paying £67.40 but they will offer me if I sign up for 12 months it for £64.64 a month. I don't think that's a great price and she said it will secure my price as it is due to go up £10 a month in the next year (!!!!!! - think I was being BS'ed).

New customers get the same thing for £67.99 and £20 off first 6 months as my package. Should I be expecting more for signing up again with them?

I did end up cancelling and hopefully they still do call back within a few days with a better offer. Do they do this still?

They claim I am already on the best discounts and can't do anything more for me.

That depends, have you had discounts previously? If you have, it is less likely you will get anything. If not you have a chance. In my experience they are likely to discuss what you use with a view to reducing your package to save you money.

    No I haven't.

I will make it clear I use everything and see what they say.

    Thanks for the post.

Hi, I currently have a virgin package of tv, broadband and telephone. It looks like i am tied into a 18 month contract. The tv is a xl package hd box with sports and one multiroom, weekend and evening calls and x amount of internet usage. we had the first 6 months for half price but My bill is now currently £90 a month which was fine until i got made redundant recently from my job. when explaining this to virgin they said that if i cut down on my deal it would void the current "special" deal therefore wouldnt be any cheaper.

If i could get some advice on this that would be much appreciated.

    Thank you
  • A good outcome for you - but what a palaver! It's this sort of cancelling, haggling and bluffing that I think we could do without. Some win, some lose, some get the callback, some don't...

How about some sort of fixed loyalty discount? Say a certain % per year? Clear and transparent pricing which rewards loyalty.

Sky engineer has just finished installing the new Sky+HD box !!
Very quick & easy installation (the existing dish (new last year) was OK along with the existing wiring (also new last year) ) so it was a simple case of plugging in the cables, tuning it to the TV and performing a system update!

    All done within 15 minutes.

    Thanks Sky !

I'd have been more than happy with that, had they offered me that when I called, I wouldn't be going anywhere. As they only offered £5 off I cancelled. I have 20 days to go, so far, all I have had is a letter saying sorry you are leaving if you change your mind call this number.

I am prepared to cancel and move phone and BB to another provider as well.

After 15 years with Sky, I am finding I am using it less and I do have much more choice now than I did 15 years ago. I can get Virgin now and I have seen some decent cashback on that as well, certainly better than the £5 a month saving Sky offered.
  • Hi Guys

Just a response from my previous post a few weeks ago about cancelling Sky.

Had an email today to say I'm in my final stages of cancelling, here is what will happen, call us as we may have some deals for you, etc etc...

I give them a call and explained why I was cancelling, told him the 'truth' that it was way too expensive and that I couldn't afford it anymore, nothing wrong with the service, simply a money factor.

Previously I had Sky Entertainment Extra, MUTV and HD package. The gentleman that was on the phone was chatty so we had a bit of a chat about work etc, he put me on hold and came back with the full package, movies, sports, etc etc all for 50% discount for 12 months! Glad to say I couldn't be happier with the offer he gave me, just goes to show, a bit of banter might go a long way in getting the discount that you want!

Hope this helps with anyone who are looking to cancel.

I put my notice in around 4 weeks ago now, they offered me nothing at the time either, you will get letters saying sorry to see you go, got an email this morning (think I'm about 2/3 days before I get cut off) to say give us a call as we may have an offer that would suit you.

I'd sit tight if I were you, and run it right till the end
