Just had a "live chat" with a Sky representative and it looks like you have to pay a one off payment of £25 to use Freesat with Sky (bit cheeky in my eyes)
I was under the impression, originally, that I would need to buy a viewing card from Sky to be able to do this.
When I contacted Sky they said that because my existing viewing card (i.e. the one I'd been using their paid services with) was up to date then I could just use that and wouldn't have to pay. That's what we did.
But I have since found that you don't even need a card.
Try taking your viewing card out and see what channels you get. I believe that you will get the free channels but not the paid-for channels that are currently in your subscription. The same will be true when your subscription ends, as far as I am aware.0 -
You need a card for 'regionalisation' of BBC1, ITV1 and Channel 4 (the latter's for localised adverts only).
You also need a card for a few odd channels which are 'free to view' (i.e. they are soft encrypted in Videoguard). AIUI, they are:- LFC TV
- Channel 5 HD (Sky+HD box needed)
- Motors TV
- Sony Entertainment Television
- Sony Entertainment Television +1
- Sony Movie Channel
- Sony Movie Channel +1
- Viva
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I was wondering why they were going to charge me £25 to go with Freesat, maybe I'll try getting it for free!
I'll cancel my full subscription, if after 3 months or so we can't do without our "sky" channels I'll see if we can get back on it but for the "new customer" deals - possibly 1/2 price for 6mnths!! lol!
Thanks everyone for your help and advice, it's certainly helped me out!Trying to get back on track!!!

Just finished my 11th month so phoned to give 31 days notice. citing I can get eurosport with Virgin essential package for £10 less a month. I love wtcc, wsbk, motogp.
My package is tv, entertainment extra, bb unlimited and skytalk weekends.
Got 20% off tv for 9 months and line rental reduced to £6 for twelve months.
Now the eagle eyed will notice it would still be fractionally cheaper to be with Virgin from the above, We also watch and record a lot of fta channels like horror which I omitted to tell retentions, to get them on Virgin would require the dearer premier package.
As a fall back we had a great offer to return to Virgin, Premier package, multi-room with 2nd recordable box. However the mission this time was pure and simple. SAVE MONEY so i'm happy0 -
No, if you cancel sky you can still get the free to air channels (and HD ones if you have a sky HD box) but sky+ will not be available and any recordings you already have will not be accessible.
Also, if you have one of the old blue sky viewing cards and put that in instead of the white one, the skybox returns to being a normal PVR0 -
Interesting development half way through my cancellation month.
After logging into 'My Sky' to check my notification preferences I've noticed that they have all been changed to 'no contact required' This was not the situation 2 weeks ago and I am unable to change them back to original settings ??0 -
