Just to clarify: I have an o2 contract with free calls. My brother in law lives in ireland and has an irish mobile. can i call him on this for free from my monthly calls allowance with this technique, and if so, which is the best provider to use.

Yes the only supplier i know of that you can use, using this method is
http://www.cheapchatuk.co.uk/ 0844 access number for Eire Mobiles.
I have heard however that line quality is poor.

Yes they are. By the way,if they were not i would not have suggested you call one.;)

    From their T&C.

"Inclusive call minutes can be used to call some non-geographical and special services numbers with the following prefixes: 0800, 0808, 0844, 0845 and 0870. Once the inclusive minute allowance has been used up, calls to these numbers will be charged as calls to standard UK landlines at the prevailing tariff."

no offence meant, if anything, i was assuming i hadn't phrased my question clearly! presumably i've missed a trick for the last 6 months of my contract with o2, by not making ALL of my 0870, 0844 etc calls from my mobile, rather than my home phone line then. Ta for your help.

For Irish mobiles, try also PlanetTalkFree, weekdays http://www.planettalkfree.com/PlanetTalk0870/tabid/57/Default.aspx

You can get an 0844 number that directly connects to a specific destination from http://www.esms.com/services_numbers_pure_free.php

They told me some time ago that listing Irish mobiles on their website was out of date, but a thread here the other day says that it works. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=267408

I dont know if this has already been discussed.......

o2 and others allow specific 0870 numbers to be used to call international calls which are free using inc numbers.
The same 0870 numbers should cost around 1.5p at weekends using BT landline.
Does that mean I can make international calls using the provided 0870 at a cost of 1.5p over the week end by using BT landline??? which in my case woul be a bargain!!
Or have I got it completely wrong?

That's entirely possible, but you might find a reduced range of destinations available at weekends, and some providers recommend an 0844 number instead (these are usually at the more expensive end of the range).

If you are calling the cheapest destinations, you'd probably find alternative 0844 providers during the week as well, rather than via 0870

See the MSE Callchecker for more options from landlines, eg Call18185 account

I was just about to give up using 07744 through orange after calling the orange customer service to enquire about dialling 07744 numbers and been told I was going to be charged as if I had used my phone to make a direct international call.
But after reading your comment I decided to call again this time I was told 07744 numbers were included in the cross network minutes, to be double sure I asked the customer service advisor to put a note on my account that I did call to enquire about 07744 numbers and he’s advised me it would be taken out of my inclusive minute.
So for all of you on orange who want to use 07744 you can go ahead and use it or follower my example. ;)
I call up orange customer services this week and was told the 07744 nos would not come out of my inclusive minutes (canary 30). I'd have to pay international rates also. Seems very confusing. Can someone clarify please?
